2. Comments on teacher candidate's effectiveness of overall instruction, use of developmentally appropriate strategies, ability to lead the class, professionalism, attitudes, and demeanor throughout the period of observation:

This was a second grade class. This lesson was about Indian tribes. The students had just finished learning about the Powhatan tribe. Ms. Gill began a review of things the students remembered about this tribe. Students were well-mannered sitting on the rug and volunteered many answers. Those who did not volunteered were included in the questioning as well. Ms. Gill then introduced the Lakota tribe using a short video on the Smart Board. Students returned to their seats to construct a lap book that they will be using to study the Indians. They returned to the carpet to go over a KWL chart that they had begun on a previous day about the Powhatan tribe. Students did an excellent job of answering some of the questions they had posed at the beginning of the unit. The same chart will be used for each tribe so that students can compare and contrast the different ones. Classroom management was outstanding. Transitions happened easily. Ms. Gill has a wonderful, positive manner of teaching. I think each student in the class must feel special!
