Unit Goal: Performing weight shifts in a choreographed & improvisational dance the students have created. Lesson Title: Changing Levels, Changing Shapes. Lesson Objectives (Leaner Outcomes)
Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to: Identify and demonstrate a high, medium and low level with their bodies. Create and imitate movement and shapes that tell a story. Perform all level changes in the choreography taught.

Student Learning Standards: (National Standards/K-8 Texas Dance Guidelines) National Standards K 8 Guidelines
Standard 1: Identifying and demonstrating movement elements and skills in performing dance Perception Body Science/Somatic Application: Articulate isolated vertical and horizontal body halves to improve coordination and range of movement. Creative Expression Dance Genres & Styles: Perform shot, simple, and repetitive dances utilizing locomotor and nonlocomotor skillz.

Assessment Rubric
Lesson Learner Outcomes
Identify and demonstrate a high, medium, and low level with their bodies. Create and imitate movement and shapes that tell a story. Perform all level changes in the choreography taught.

High Level of Mastery


Students are able to verbally categorize while performing level changes. Students are able to create unique shapes along with storytelling. Students are able to flow through the level changes.

Acceptable Level of Mastery


Students are able to show three distinct levels. Students are able to make their own shapes. Students are able to physically do all of the level changes.

Low Level of Mastery


Students are able to demonstrate only one or two without teacher prompt. Students are only able to imitate shapes or story. Students are able to perform some or most of the level changes.

Instructional Sequence

7 Es/ Time

Description
Teacher will ask: How many shapes do you think there are? then transition into brain dance Students will answer question. Students will lie on the ground and do the brain dance Breathe in and out three times. Prick and swipe skin from head to toe. Core distal reaches on both sides, salamander side-to-sides on back. On hands and knees upper, lower halves & cross lateral Standing cross lateral and vestibular warm ups. Teacher will direct Simon says game Simon says. Stand tall like a building/skyscraper, be curvy like a bouncy ball, touch the stars, be a soft cloud, etc. Students will: play game WITHOUT talking. Teacher will explain: body shapes are different from geometry shapes! They can look like anything you can imagine. Were going to play a follow the leader game to see how many shapes we can make! Going around the circle one person makes a shape, everyone copies. 2nd time around, do a different shape, 3rd time around do a different level Students will play freeze dance dancing at a low level first, switching to medium and high as teacher prompts. Song ends, everyone is laying on ground quietly ready to transition into audience/performance time. Teacher will: play freeze dance song on stops/pauses the children freeze. Give them different instructions on what level or shape to focus on as they dance for that section. Teacher will divide class into three groups. Each group will stand and perform a level the teacher calls out, do this twice. Then add a shape and level; do this 3 times. After each group has a turn, Students will discuss what they saw and what they learned today! Students will learn one eight count of choreography, memorize and perform it.
