Objective:
Students will create a modified version of an etching print by using Styrofoam, paint, and a collage. Students will focus on pop art by exploring artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Students will express pop art by their composition use of pattern, three color scheme, an image of a popular topic, and a word relating to the image.

Process:
1.Gather photos of pop culture in current newspapers and magazines. Fashion, music, politics, sports, and movies are all subjects to explore. Closely cropped images and paste them on the paper you will trace.
NOTE: Elaborate on composition! Ask what they have learned from before and what they know about good composition.

2.Place tracing paper over the photos and create contour line drawings with a pencil. Determine which lines are important and which are not, keeping backgrounds simple. Plan solid black outlines, large areas of color and shapes shaded with dots. Limit colors to black, red, yellow and blue. Remove photo frequently to check progress.
NOTE: Comic-book action words or conversation "balloons" will need to be reversed. Turn the tracing paper over and draw words on the back side.

3.Place traced drawing on top of the Styrofoam and with a pen, press into the Styrofoam. This will create the etching for your print. 4.Make the color plate first, beginning with yellow ink, followed by red and then blue. Work from left to right to avoid dragging through the ink. Lay your print onto your final paper after each color. To make sure you place the print onto the same spot of your paper, trace where you laid your print the first time onto the bigger sheet of paper. Wash Styrofoam in between color applications and prints. 5.Use roller to press down on the paper. This can be our printing press. This will allow the paint to get onto the paper and the etched lines to show through. 6.After all three color applications and the print is dried, use a black sharpie to define lines and to add black color to your print.
