Metropolitan cities in Bangladesh are growing at a rapid rate. Dire levels of poverty in many regions, as well as rampant unemployment, homelessness, natural disasters, family conflicts and a deteriorating law-and-order situation, have led to extensive rural and urban migration.
Within the harsh realities of city life, the wellbeing of children is often sacrificed, leaving them vulnerable to abandonment and abuse. Street children are particularly vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. Girls especially are at risk, often becoming victims of sexual and emotional abuse or human trafficking for the sex trade.
Plan's Street Children Development Project was implemented by Plan Bangladesh as part of its Protection of Vulnerable Children programme in order to aid this under-served and at-risk demographic.
