The Task
This week we will be learning about different aspects of the fall season. To incorporate all of your class subjects with a fun Welcome to Fall: Fall Days theme, in groups and individually you will research and learn about leaves, pumpkins, counting, and story telling. Your task is to: Find five leaves Dig seeds out of a pumpkin Identify your leaves Measure your leaves Read an assigned book and identify the characters, major events and challenges that took place in it Count your pumpkin seeds and complete a math assignment using them By the end of this WebQuest you will have: Used an online leaf book to identify leaves Investigated, compared and identified a variety of different leaves Developed reading comprehension skills and note taking strategies Learned about and understood the base-10 mathematics system Used a ruler to measure concave objects Created your own personal leaf book Expanded your knowledge of pumpkins and learned the average seed count of a pumpkin Developed some basic Internet skills Learned to work in peer groups to achieve an expected outcome

Monday:
Monday we will be going to a park collecting at least five leaves that have fallen off the trees. These leaves will be used for different activities that we will be doing in class. We will also be cleaning out pumpkins. The pumpkin top will already be cut out and in groups students will be cleaning out the pumpkins. The seeds will then be washed, cleaned off and used for another activity later in the week.

The Process

Tuesday
Leaf day 1. As a class, we went outside yesterday and collected leaves! Today we will be using those leaves to identify which type of trees that the leaves come from. 2. First, you will need to choose five different looking leaves and take them back to your table. 3. You will then use the worksheet to match your leaves up with the pictures and identify the names of the leaves. 4. After you identify the leaves, you will then glue them into the already made leaf books at the front of the room. 5. In the book, you will glue one leaf per page and name the type of leaf on the bottom of the page where the line is identified! Measurement of the Fall Leaves 1. As a class, we went outside yesterday and collected leaves! Today we will be using those leaves to measure and estimate the length in standard units. 2. First, you will need to choose five different sized leaves and also grab a ruler from the bucket. 3. You will then carefully examine the leaf and try to estimate the length of the leaves in standard units. 4. You will then use the ruler to measure the five different sized leaves. You will need to measure them in inches and in centimeters. 5. After you identify the length, you will then glue them into the already made leaf books at the front of the room. 6. In the book, you will glue one leaf per page write down the correct measurement of length in the standard units.

This can either be done by yourself or with a partner and then we will read it aloud to each other with the whole class. After reading the book we will have a paper cut out of a leaf and on it we will answer questions about the book. You have to be able to answer the following questions on your own: 1. Why could none of Mouses friends play tag? 2. Did Mouse say he wanted to get ready for whats to come just like everyone else was doing? 3. Why was Ground Hog getting chubby? Was he doing it on purpose? 4. When Ground Hog took Mouse to the field where all the other mice were what did Mouse think the other mice were doing?

Thursday:
You will get back into the same groups that you worked in when you dug the seeds out of your pumpkin. Today your group will count all of the seeds that you found. Once your group has figured out how many seeds your pumpkin has, your teacher will give you some glue sticks and a worksheet with the following numbers listed along the top: 725; 203; 564; 925; 800. Go to this website to review the mathematical base-10 number system. While youre there you can click on the red Lets Practice! button if you group members want to review a little more before completing the worksheet: (http://www.studyzone.org/testprep/math4/d/baseten4l.cfm). As a group, use your pumpkin seeds as base-10 blocks and place them in the correct columns on your worksheet to match the numbers at the top.
