Will I be insured while abroad?

Like the rest of Spain, Barcelona has free, universal healthcare


To become fully insured under the health care system, you must have a social security number

Social Security numbers are issued through your employer

Once legally employed in Spain, your employer is obligated to put 30% of your salary into a health fund that covers you and your dependents. This covers:

Doctors visits Some medications Eye exams (not glasses/contacts) Emergency and certain other surgeries Dental is NOT included

Some companies include their own dental plans

Certificado de Empadronamiento

Gives you the right to emergency care at any public hospital

Easy to get through a simple registration process


Available to any resident (permanent or not) of Spain How to Register:

Go to the local town hall (Ayuntamiento) Show proof of your address, and ID Fill out an application You will receive your Certificate on the spot or within one week
