TPT Preschool Assistant I & II


SALARY: $7.78 - $14.89 Hourly OPENING DATE: 09/09/13 CLOSING DATE: Continuous JOB SUMMARY:

Hiring Range for Preschool Assistant I: $7.78 - $10.17 Hourly Hiring Range for Preschool Assistant II: $9.03 - $14.89 Hourly Working in a temporary capacity, this position will be responsible for assisting in providing quality care for children enrolled in City of Lakewood Early Childhood, Summer Camp Programs, Lakewood Head Start and Preschool programs. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean, nurturing and supportive environment. Assists with implementing developmentally appropriate programming; interacts with parents as needed; assists supervisor with special projects as assigned and maintains the classroom in the absence of the teacher.

Hours for Preschool Assistant I: Hours are usually weekday; daytime hours, some evenings may be required for training or childcare during parent meetings.
Hours for TPT Preschool Assistant II: Hours of work will vary based on coverage needs but must be available to work up to five eight-hour days covering hours between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.
MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (This job description does not intend to list every function on the position.) Assists with maintenance of a positive and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the classroom. Preschool Assistant I: Follows daily plans and classroom routine. Actively participates in and reinforces childrens play indoors and outdoors. Enforces established classroom rules and limits for behavior consistently and calmly. Follows classroom procedures for health and safety. Maintains a cooperative working relationship with each family. Follows procedure for reporting suspected child abuse. Assists teacher with recording anecdotal information on individual children. May assist with Summer Preschool or School Age Camps if assigned. Preschool Assistant II:
Helps with lesson planning and implementation into the classroom routine. Participates in the classroom by planning and implementing small groups on a regular basis. Actively participate in and

reinforce childrens play indoors and outdoors. Promote and reinforce childrens oral communication. Communicate with children at their physical level. Enforce established classroom rules and limits for behavior consistently and calmly. Follow classroom procedures for health and safety.Follow procedure for reporting suspected child abuse. Follow site procedures for maintenance and security at the beginning and end of each day. Supports off site excursions by maintaining appropriate child/teacher ratio and supervision. Assist assigned children with helper jobs relating to food service in keeping with food program guidelines. Supervision Received: Receives general supervision from the ECE Supervisor. Supervision Given: None

IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS:
Assists co-workers in preparing and maintaining an orderly classroom environment.

Preschool Assistant I: Implements nutrition goals during eating times and during nutrition education activities. May support small groups of children for brief periods during the dailyroutine. Attends required training, in-services and meetings. Maintains sanitationof food service areas in keeping with food program guidelines. Preschool Assistant II:
Attend required trainings, in-services, and meetings. Wash classroom dishes to insure that they are ready for the next use in keeping with food program guidelines. Maintain sanitation of food service areas in keeping with food program guidelines.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Preschool Assistant I Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED. College ECE coursework preferred. One year experience with children under age 6 in a group setting is preferred. CDA preferred. Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certificates. Preschool Assistant II: Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or related degree OR An unrelated Bachelor's degree with ECE 101 and an additional three credit college ECE class OR A 2-year college degree in child development or early childhood education from an accredited college or university OR
Current certification as a Child Development Associate (CDA) or Certified Childcare Professional (CPP) or other Department approved credential OR Completion of 2 years of college education, with at least two college course in Early childhood Education (ECE 101 and an additional three credit college ECE class) plus 6 months (910 hours) of verified experience in the care and supervision of four or more children under six years of age who are not related to the individual OR A current Colorado Level I credential OR two (2) three-credit college courses with once course being Intro to ECE. Hours include at least twenty-four (24) months (3,640 hours) of verified experience. Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current certification in CPR/First Aid Must meet State requirements for Early Childhood Teacher.

Must be able to work independently and as a team member. Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner.

Requires prompt attendance at various sites. Ability to work effectively with children. Ability to remain calm during crisis situations. Acceptance of diversity and ability to work comfortably with the public. Willing to learn and apply NAEYCs Developmentally Appropriate Practices. Bi-lingual language skills preferred. Criminal background check is required. Additional for Preschool Assistant II: Knowledge of Department of Human Services Child Care Rules and Regulations for childcare centers. Effective oral and written communications skills. Current physical exam and turberculosis test results required, per Colorado Licensing Rules and Regulations. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Lifting and Carrying: Preschool Assistant I: Must be able to lift equipment used in child-care facility and small children aged 3-5 years of age weighing up to 40 pounds Preschool Assistant II: Must be able to lift equipment used in child care facility and small children. Must be able to lift coolers and carriers delivered with food service items weighing up to 40 pounds on a daily basis. Pushing and Pulling: Must be able to push or pull playground equipment, i.e., tricycles, wagons, swings, etc. each day. Must be able to move tables and chairs when serving meals and cleaning; need to transport children in a wagon in an emergency. Additional Preschool Assistant I: Must push or pull boxes weighing up to 40 pounds into and out of storage once a week. Body Positions: Moves about, bends, sits on floor, and stands in activities with young children four to eight hours per day. Must have good mobility in case of emergency evacuation of the facility. Hearing: Employee must hear children in the classroom and on the playground or be able to communicate effectively with all children and families in the program. Vision: Employee uses vision to read handwriting and other written communication, including classroom lesson plans and childrens individual plans. Must be able to monitor childrens activity effectively. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Mathematics: Must have basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills for calculating data and teaching young children appropriate skills. Remembering: Must be able to remember childrens names and abilities, classroom schedules and details of classroom management. Must be able to remember policies and procedures and apply them in daily work. Additional Preschool Assistant II: Must be able to retain information supplied by parents and staff and be able to transmit necessary information to coworkers and client families. Language Ability: Must be an effective oral and written communicator with both children and adults. Reasoning: Must be able to explain events on a childs level as well as understanding from an adult perspective; must be able to handle crisis situations appropriately.

WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in a classroom environment. Work includes frequent interruptions, working with children with high needs, and high noise level during some part of the day. Travel may be required to attend training and meetings. Preschool Assistant I: Hours are usually weekday; daytime hours, some evenings may be required for training or childcare during parent meetings. Preschool Assistant II: May involve occasional weekend hours or evening training sessions.
