Examine reasons for Chinas hostility to the West Look at reasons for/against reformation and contact with Western countries

Inquiry 1 textbook, page 217-219, 222-223 (sources) 438-440,

Introduction (5 minutes)
Refresher of last lesson (mandate of heaven, Confucius - 5 relationships, filial piety)

Main Activity (45 minutes)


Read through the above pages relating to Chinas contact with the West. Look at the sources on pages 222 and 223 and examine the reasons for some Chinese wanting reformation. Answer questions in book.

Differentiations (changes for students) Plenary (40 minutes)


Class debate: divide in thirds - 1) Chinese against West 2) Chinese for reform 3) Westerners wanting to trade. Each group gets 3 minutes to speak, then an additional 3 to rebut remarks made by others, then final remarks.
