1. Explain why you chose the object you did. I chose this PowerPoint because this PowerPoint was recently used at the ASA meeting. This PowerPoint was used to explain to the members about Laos culture. Also, it is a way for the organization to achieve their goal. 2. What do you already know about this object? How does that affect your interpretation of its significance (importance) in the subculture/community? The only thing that I knew about this object was the location of the country. I only knew that Laos was located in Asia near Thailand. With the minimal information that I know about this country, the significance of this country has increased because now we know what the country is known for. 3. Think about the values this artifact reflects for this subculture. What are they? How do you know? (i.e. what things are made important? What things are shown to be good, appropriate, and liked?) The values that this artifact reflects for this subculture is that this PowerPoint helps the organization reach their goal, which is to spread Asian awareness to everyone. Presenting a new country/culture would allow people to expand their knowledge that more than the few well known Asian countries actually exists. The good things that are shown about Laos is that Laos is one of the most well-known country for traveling. The most liked part of the presentation was about food, sticky rice. 4. How is this object used in the subculture? What does that tell you about its significance and the value it has for the group? The significance and value of this PowerPoint helped people expand their knowledge and helps ASA accomplish their goal. 5. What literacies are needed to use this artifact? Only the very basic literacy was needed, such as knowing how to read and write. 6. What words or phrases stand out as lexis of the community? The capital, Vientian, stood out as lexis of the community because of the pronunciation. Although, the way it is pronounced was shown on the board but to most non-members it was still hard to pronounce. 7. How is this artifact connected to other behaviors and values in this group? This artifact connects to the behavior in this group by how the group reacted to the presentation. The group enjoyed the presentation, especially the food part, and was respectful. The values that were shown is that the group remembered the information in this PowerPoint. 8. What research might you do on the object's history? uses? Honestly, no research is necessary because the history and culture of this object was already shown through itself. 9. Finish this sentence: The three (or more) most important things this artifact tells me about this subculture are... because.... The three most important things this artifact tells me about this subculture are the ways ASA use to accomplish their goal, to spread Asian awareness, shows how the members react to the presentation, and reflects how attentive the members were during the meeting. These three things were shown because that was basically why the presentation existed, the members attentiveness was reflected because after the presentation, they were able to answer the questions that were asked, and the reaction because it shows how accepting the members are of new culture.
