Then have them place it on the country on the world map at the front of the room. - For todays social studies lesson, we will be learning the names of, and locating the seven continents. In order to understand what continents are, lets start small. Ask the following questions: o Who can tell me which city you all live in? Call on a student. Fairfax o Very good ____. Now who knows what state we live in? Call on a student. Virginia o Now, who can point this out on the map for the class? Instructional Strategies (30 minutes) - Pull down the United States map and pick a student volunteer. This student should be able to point to Virginia on the United States map. - Now were going to get a little bit harder. Which one of you can tell me what country

we are living in today? Call on a student. o United States of America or America. Use the pull down map as a reference. Very good. Now, if we look at the map we can see all the different states, like Virginia, that make up the United States. Now its time for the challenge question! Does anyone in here know what continent we are living on? Call on a student. o North America Can anyone point out which of these land masses is North America? Take a volunteer to come to the pull down map. Excellent job _____! And its okay that some of you did not know this, because this is what we are going to be learning today! Now boys and girls, who can tell me what these other big pieces of land are called? o Continents How many big pieces of land do you all see? Why dont we count them for together. o Count 7 of them. There are seven continents. For our activity, we are going to break up into 7 table groups. Each table group is going to be in charge of learning about a continent. You will each go on a Virtual Fieldtrip of your continent! Once you have finished your fieldtrip, you will each get a puzzle piece of your continent to color! When your group is finished, put your puzzle pieces together to form your continent. Once thats done, come glue it to the blank map on the front wall. When time is up, each group will come up front, and share some information about their continent with the class so we can all learn about your continent! I am going to give each of you each of you a packet. I want you to check out the continents and where they are located on

the map in your packet. On the checklist of countries in the packet, I want you to write the name of the continent the country is in. o Pass out the packets. While the students are working on this, walk around the classroom and see if they are finding the items or need any help. Time is up, eyes up front. Which places were easiest to find? Take a few answers. Which ones were more difficult to find? Take a few answers. Do you think its important to know where the continents are located and which continents are which? Why? o So we know where things are happening in the world Collect packets
