Glenna Burney Extra Credit SOC 300 12/05/13

Killing us Softly 4 by Jean Killbourne is a video presentation depicting the relevance of advertisements having an unconscious effect on women and young girls self-esteem and selfconcept. The advertisements that Killbourne uses to support her argument are advertisements that she started to collect in 1979 through today and in her opinion they are examples of how society portrays the ideal woman by objectifying her to have a perfect, flawless body and physical features. In addition to flawlessness, advertisements also exploit womens sexuality by portraying the female body parts as objects that fulfill the interests and desires of men. With that being said, this essay is written to expose the reality of what Kilbourne believes places us in a toxic cultural environment that influences how we perceive ourselves and how society perceives us in relation to how advertisements portray normalcy.
