Course Description
This course is designed to enhance the knowledge base of the student in the area of pharmacology and drug therapy. This course is designed to present basic knowledge of pharmacology for allied health professionals. Legal and ethical issues of medication administration are also covered.

Prerequisites
HM 105 Medical Terminology and HM 224 Anatomy and Physiology for HIM.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Become familiar with drug categories. 2. Classify generic and trade name drugs into these categories. 3. Define common drug abbreviations, including units of measurement. 4. Demonstrate the proper use of drug reference materials.

Teaching Strategies
It is the facultys responsibility to provide a structure and framework for learning and to give guidance and direction to all learning experiences. Each student is responsible for his/her own learning. Using a variety of strategies on the eCollege course site, the course faculty aims to facilitate the students learning activities that are directed to meet the course outcomes. However, learning is ultimately the responsibility of the student and active participation is expected.

Student Responsibilities for Learning


1. Check in with the virtual classroom at least 3 out of 7 days each week. 2. Familiarity with the syllabus, class announcements, assigned discussion threads, and all other positngs in the classroom. 3. Required assignments must be completed. 4. Involvement in class exercises and participation in class discussions via the class website is expected. 5. Thinking beyond the text is encouraged. 6. Please be sure to take advantage of all learning resources provided within the course. This instructor reserves the right to refer the student back to the course if it is seen that adequate time has not been spent within the course resources. 7. It is expected that if the student loses internet access on a personal level, the student will take responsibility to seek alternative means to access the internet in order to complete course work. As stated in the Online Education Manual, internet access is a requirement of the online student. 8. Clarkson College students may be required with or without notice to submit to drug testing. Please refer to the Clarkson College Drug and Alcohol policy, as found within the most current College academic catalog for details.

Online Campus
Courses at Clarkson College maintain an online presence. Courses can be accessed at ClarksonDistance.net. If students experience technical difficulties, they should contact the Online Campus Help Desk at 877.740.2213 or utilize the Tech Support tab within the course. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Course Calendar
Each Focus will begin on Monday at 12:00am and end at 11:59pm on Sunday of the next week with homework due by 11:59pm on Sunday. Any variation to this will be related to the class thorough email or course announcements. Lectures will be posted by Monday mid-morning, with the exception of any technical difficulties. Assignments may be added at the discretion of the instructor. The suggested outline should not be construed by the student as an exact direction for which the course will follow. For course enhancement, variations in the course outline, as deemed necessary by the instructor(s) are possible.

Evaluation Methods

EXAMS There will be one exam. The Final Exam will cover lecture, textbook, and any handouts provided by the instructor throughout the course. Exams will be delivered via eCollege; and will require a proctor. The exam is worth a total of 100 points. The final exam will be comprehensive of the semester. QUIZZES There will be weekly quizzes. The quizzes will cover information studied in the corresponding focus. Quizzes do not need to be proctored, however, this instructor expects that all quizzes will be completed independently, and with resources approved of by this instructor only. Evidence to the contrary will result in disciplinary action as outlined in the Academic Integrity policy, SW-25. WEEKLY ACTIVITIES/DISCUSSION Discussions will be held within the eCollege system. Students are expected to participate in discussions and ask questions of classmates.

Grading Scale

Grades will be distributed by dividing the sum of the students earned points by the possible points. The following letter grades will be assigned: A BD 100% 94% 86% 84% 69% 65% AC+ F 93% 92% B+ 83% 80% C 64% and below 91% 89% 79% 75% B C88% 87% 74% 70%

Course Policies
ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION POLICY

Attendance in the online campus is mandatory and will be tracked. Students are expected to participate by responding to course discussions and all posted assignments. Students should participate no less than 3 out of 7 days a week.
GRADING POLICY

Students are responsible for contacting the course instructor if there is any difficulty in understanding the course materials or completing the course assignments. Assignments must be submitted by the published due dates unless special permission has been obtained prior to the published due date. 25% of the total assignment points will be deducted for each week an assignment is late. Some assignments may not be submitted late. Grades resulting in .5-.9 in the tenth decimal place shall be rounded up to the next level. For example, 94.6 will be rounded to 95. However, 94.4 will remain 94. Integers in the hundredth decimal place will not be considered. For example, 94.46 shall not be rounded up to 94.5. Students can expect feedback from the instructor within 3 business days following the due date.

INCOMPLETE GRADES

Only extenuating circumstances as deemed by the course instructor will permit granting an Incomplete (I) grade for the course. The student must be passing the course at the time of the Incomplete request. If a

student is not passing at the time of the incomplete request, the student will not be eligible for an Incomplete (I) grade. Criteria guidelines and timelines for completion of course content will be set by the course instructor. Incomplete grades that are not resolved by the guidelines and scheduled time period will automatically convert to a Zero (0) for the course content item(s).
EXAMINATIONS

Exams will be administered online. By default, the proctor for all students is the on campus Testing Center. If students plan to use this facility, they should see the Testing Center webpage for registration and scheduling information. Students who do not plan to use the on-campus facility must submit a Test Proctor Change Form, which is due the first week of class to the online education coordinator. At online@clarksoncollege.edu or by calling 402.552.3030 or 800.647.5500, ext.23030. Students will need to make the appropriate arrangements for scheduling their exams. The student will have a period of a few days in which to complete the scheduled exam and if the exam is not completed during that time, they will fall under the grading policy for late assignments or exams (refer to grading policy). It is expected that students will use the resourses allowed by the instructor for homework and examinations, and will not work together unless allowed by the instructor. Any violation to the Clarkson Academic Integrity policy will be handled according to that policy.

Clarkson College Policies


ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

Clarkson College views academic integrity as a reflection of a students personal integrity. Therefore, all students are required and expected to maintain the highest standards of academic integrity in the preparation of all work and examinations. Students found in violation of the academic integrity policy (SW-25) are subject to disciplinary action. Students can obtain more information about the Academic Integrity Policy in the College Student Handbook.
ACCOMMODATIONS

Clarkson College is committed to equal access to all programs for otherwise qualified students with documented disabilities. HEALTH AND SAFETY COMPLIANCE

In compliance with regulatory bodies, it is the student's responsibility to maintain paperwork and standards for Health and Safety requirements, as set forth in their individual program of study, including any General Education courses. All Health and Safety requirements are to be maintained and updated by the student in their Certified Background account. ADDING / WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSE

A course may be added through the first five days of instruction in a semester or prior to the second class meeting in a short term. This also applies to transferring from one section of a course to another section. After the designated time, the approvals of the instructor and the program director of the course are required. A course may be withdrawn and a refund granted if it is accomplished according to the tuition refund schedule. It is the students responsibility to initiate a Change of Registration form to the Registrars office. Clarkson College will not be responsible for completed forms that which are given to faculty or staff for submission. NOTE: Only Student Financial Services may authorize reimbursement of fees or tuition. Directors, faculty or staff are not authorized to approve reimbursement. LENGTH OF COURSE 15 week course On or before the 8th week of the course 12 week course On or before the 7th week of the course 6 week course On or before the 3rd week of the course Courses may not be withdrawn during the final week of the semester period.
ATTENDANCE / NON-ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled and follow the attendance policies of individual programs as specified in the course syllabus. Faculty will report, within two working days of the last class missed, the names of students who have two or more unexcused absences in a semester to their Program director. These names will be sent to the Registrar and Financial Aid will be notified.
