Nichole Thompson DAE 315 Standard Based Lesson Plan Graduations with Crosshatching 8th Grade

I. Outcome: The students will come out of this project with the understanding that crosshatching is often used to create tonal effects, by varying the spacing of lines or by adding additional layers of lines II. Standard/Benchmark: Content Standard 1: All students will apply skills and knowledge to perform in the arts. ART.VA.II.8.1 ART.VA.II.8.2 Effectively identify, design, and solve creative problems. Effectively develop and apply critical thinking strategies through the art making process. Make knowledgeable choices about materials, techniques, media technology, organizational principles, and processes to effectively articulate ideas and communicate intended meaning.

III. Objective: Students will demonstrate knowledge of crosshatching. The students will demonstrate how two layers of hatching at right-angles create a mesh-like pattern. Multiple layers in varying directions can be used to create textures.. IV. Anticipatory set/Motivation: I will show the students a series of Drawings that where done by crosshatching. The students will have already learned Graduations with blending. The students will also have learned how each grade of pencil produces a graduation with different range of values. V. Model the Process: Criteria: The students will use pencils from 8H 8B. Using the pencils each student will provide three practice crosshatching graduation sketches showing they know how to graduate different values into one another. After each student has demonstrated they understand how to make a crosshatching graduation they will draw their final drawing of their chose of still life, animal, or something in nature on a 11x14 piece of heavy stock paper. Task Analysis: 1. Draw three practice crosshatching graduation sketches showing they know how to graduate different values into one another. 2. Find an image of still life, animal, or something in nature out of the magazines provided. 3. Complete drawing on 11x14 piece of heavy stock paper.

Vocabulary: Crosshatching, Graduations, Design, Scale. Materials: 8x10 plan white paper, 11x14 heavy stock paper, pencils 8H 8B, magazines to chose an image to draw from for final piece. Demonstration: 1. Show each step as we do it. 2. Show power point of examples of cross hatching 3. Have students make three studies of the examples shown 4. Give students 30 minuets to complete. 5. The three practice crosshatching graduation sketches will be done individually on one sheet of 8x10. VI. Check for Understanding: 1. What is Crosshatching? 2. What is graduation? 3. Howdo you flow different values smoothly into one another? 4. What pencil would you use to shad lighter? VII. Monitor and Adjust: As students work, teacher observes and assists. VIII. Accommodations: There are two students in class that have learning disabilities, one child has ADHD and the other is hearing impaired. I will provide instructions for each student individually directly after giving a demonstration for the next step to the class. The child with ADHD will be allowed to stand while doing the project if needed and will be redirected to focus on the steps. Both children will be placed in the front of the classroom. The hearing impaired child will be able to read lips clearly and will also be given written instructions for each step. IX. Clean up: Allow 10 minutes for clean up. All materials must be back in their assigned places and drawers. All students must be seated when done. X. Closure and Assessment: Each student will pin their crosshatching drawing on the board so as a class we can give feedback on if the correct crosshatching and shading was used.
