LESSON TWO: Lesson Objective Students will be able to identify what composite shapes are and demonstrate the

use of composite shapes to compose new shapes by designing their own Tangram picture of any object they choose and explaining the shapes used. Assessments PRE: Students will be shown different shapes on a flash card to assess their knowledge of the shapes. The students will also be asked to identify the shapes found within a shape (for example, a two triangles combined to create a square, etc.) DURING: Teacher candidate will walk around, and observe what each student is creating. She will discuss their pictures with them and take notes POST: The teacher candidate will collect the students work and review each picture to see if students understood the concept of composite shapes using Tangrams. Format of Formative Assessments PRE: Flash Cards- Flash cards will be shown to the class to see if they recognize each shape. For those who do not correctly identify the shape, the teacher candidate will note who did not recognize the shape or shapes. Smart Board- Using the shape maker on the Smart Board, the teacher candidate will combine certain shapes to create one big shape and note if students can tell what shape can be created. DURING: Observation- While students are working on their Tangrams, the teacher candidate will walk around the classroom and check on students progress. This will be a good time to assist any students who need help. Instead of telling students how to place the shapes, the teacher candidate will recommend how they can place a shape or suggest placing the shape in another spot. Accommodations Assist anyone who needs help. Early finishers will have opportunity to work on any uncompleted morning work or create another Tangram

POST: Observation- The teacher candidate will collect each students Tangram. She will look over each one to ensure they filled in all the spaces with the shapes.

For my pre-assessment, I reviewed the different shapes that we would be working with during the lesson. I then discussed composite shapes with the class, and provided examples on the Smart Board. My during-assessment consisted of observations. While the class worked on their Tangrams, I walked around the room and provided feedback and assistance. The postassessment also consisted of observations. Once everyone completed their Tangrams, I collected their work and reviewed whether or not they filled the shape in correctly using all of the shapes provided in the envelope. The assessment results will allow me to see how well students can follow directions, how complex or simple a lesson needs to be to cater to each childs educational needs. This can also determine what type of activity may be used for future lessons, depending on how well they receive the information.
