I see the huge mountain with its massive grey cliffs while snow wafts about. The wind whistles all around me as I walk away from the warm cave with spear in hand, and head towards the forest for hunting. I feel the frigid air against my face as if I were standing in a freezer. I run through the cold blanket of snow, feeling the prickly pine needles brush past my face. I breathe in the thin air of the high altitude mountain. I can hear the hooting of an owl as I notice that night is well on its way. I run back through the cold knee-deep snow back to the cave for safety. I hear wolves howl and I begin to run faster. Up ahead I smell the smoke from the re that I made the day before. I take a bite of the succulent venison I caught yesterday. I look up as if I were to see the whole of the mountain, the great mountain that I live on.

Part I Analysis of the problem ! The rst step in building a successful civilization is to secure basic human needs such as food

and water. Due to its geography, the major challenges the civilization of Rarlj faces in achieving a basic food and water supply include the following:

1.! Food in the mountains is difcult to come by. Farming is near impossible. The ground is hard and rocky and the air is too cold. Even if you managed to plant crops they would perish due to the extreme climate. They may be ripped from the ground by storms or by oods or succumb to the freezing temperatures. Without the ability to farm we would be forced to hunt, which may pose its own problems. Even if we could nd animals we would have to capture them. There are many predators that could compete for our prey and attack us when we are hunting. During winter, many animals hibernate and we would have increased difculty in nding food. Without proper sustenance our people would starve and our civilization would fail.

2.! Water is not very hard to come by in the mountains. Though it is found easily, it is usually contaminated. You must nd a way to purify the water so that you can drink it. During the winter it would be even harder to get water. The climate is cold and the air may reach freezing temperatures, thus freezing any available water. We would need to swiftly obtain the resources to thaw the water in order to drink it. Without potable water everyone would die in a matter of days. !

Part II Proposed Solutions ! A modication is when you make changes to your environment to meet your civilizations needs. An example of modication is when you are when farmers make earth steps to farm easier on mountainous land.

(Frey 37). This can help us to water our plants. Hunting is also a problem if there is ever a shortage of animals, then we could starve. Also, some other carnivorous animals might compete for our food. To solve this problem we could domesticate and breed animals. We could also put them into animal pens so that the predators could not get to them too easily. By doing these things our civilization can thrive.

Farming in the mountains is almost impossible, (for the ancient Greeks), the ground is cold and weather can easily tear small plants form the ground (Frey 244). To solve this problem, we can make enclosed farms. There can be mud or stonewalls to keep out the cold and the roof could be made of animal skin that could be opened or closed depending on the weather. We could also grow plants that can grow in high altitudes such as olives and melons. Like the Mesopotamians, we can also build complex irrigation systems

Water in the mountains is not hard to nd. Though it is not hard to nd, the water is usually contaminated. There is a fairly easy solution to this problem; you can boil the water using re. By boiling the water, you can disinfect it so that it is mostly safe to drink. During winter most of the water will have frozen solid. This problem also has a fairly easy solution all you have to do is light a re next to the frozen water so that it melts and you can drink it. Also, you can build levees like the Mesopotamians to block water in deeper

Maintaining Civil Order

Part I Lessons on Democracy ! ! Most civilizations had to go through multiple stages of government. In Athens they rst had a monarchy, witch was one person that ruled over the rest. They later switched to a new form of government called Democracy. Athens became a democracy around 500 B.C.E. (Frey 261). They became a democracy is because the people wanted their own say in their government. Ath8

ens used a direct democracy where the Athenian assembly would debate and vote on laws, though only free male citizens 18 years or older could vote. This type of government would be wonderful because everyone gets his say in political affairs and power is distributed equally. ! !

Sparta used an oligarchy; a form of government when power was in the hands of a few. Like Athens, Sparta had an assembly. But the important decisions were made by a much smaller group called the council of elders.(Frey 265). The Council of Elders consisted of 2 kings and 28 elders. The elders made all of the laws and Spartan Assembly could only vote yes or no. Explain Spartan Assembly. This type of government is not the best type because citizens do not get much of a say in the government. This could lead to rebellions or even wars between the government and the people. ! ! Rome like Athens was rst a monarchy ruled by Etruscan kings. The Patricians advised these kings. Later on they drove the Etruscan kings out changed their government to a republic. But that was only the beginning of Romes problems. The plebeians who made up most of Romes population were angry at the patricians at their lack of power. The struggle between the plebeians and the patricians was known as the Conict of Orders.(Frey 319). In which the plebeians eventually left Rome altogether. Eventually the plebeians shared the power evenly with the plebeians. This shows that all paths eventually lead to democracy because the people wanted to be involved in their government and believed that power must be divided equally for the government to run smoothly.

Part II Code of Laws

! ! Now that Rarlj is thriving there more and more problems have been inuenced on Rarlj. Laws must be made to protect the people of Rarlj. Some threats for the people of Rarlj are: 1)! Murderer is one of the worst threats to our society; people will not feel safe and may leave the society of Rarlj. This is one of the most important laws to create; if everyone leaves or is killed then there wont even be a Rarlj anymore. 2) Stealing is also one of the worst threats to our society. When people are stolen from they will not feel safe and will leave or start stealing other peoples things, which may lead to ghts and eventually wars. This is one of the more important laws to create people need to feel safe, if people dont feel safe then they will either ght or leave and that is not good for a civilization.

III. If you threaten someone you shall be exiled. If you come back you will be sent to jail for a life sentence. If you escape or attempt to escape you shall be sent to labor camp under high security for life. IV. If you are convicted of anything and believe you are not guilty you may go to court to prove you are not guilty. V. If you lie in court you shall be sent to labor camp. Rarlj does not relates to Hammurabi's Code and the 12 tables. This is because none of my laws are eye for and eye or public punishment. My laws are more fair and less public it also puts people that do wrong things to work instead of just killing them or hurting them. These laws are more humane and more fair than revenge stye laws. These laws will make the people of Rarlj feel safe and secure.

Part III - Political Leadership Lessons from Julius Caesar ! The story of Julius Caesar taught the civilization of Rarlj many things about how to run a government and how not to. When Julius Caesar was named dictator in 45 B.C.E. He was loved and loathed throughout rome for about one year before he was murdered by a group of senators. Caesar did many things to help the poor in the great Empire of Rome. He created jobs for the poor by requiring that one third of all land owned must be farmed by citizens of Rome. He also created free entertainment for the poor y creating free entertainment in a theater or Amphitheater. He also watched over tax collectors so they could not tax the poor so much.

It is written that all the people of Rarlj will follow these laws I. If you steal you will go to jail for 1 year and you must give what you stole back. If you do not have what you stole then you will pay twice the amount the thing you stole was worth. II. If you murder someone you shall be sent to jail for life. If you escape or attempt to escape you shall be sent to labor camp under high security for life.

Though this drastically helped the poor, all of this meant less money for the rich. Which eventually led to senators killing Caesar.

! The civilization of Rarlj can learn from the mistakes that Julius Caesar made. First off we must give the people what they want and make them feel as if they are part of the government. If the people feel as if they are being commanded around by someone they will rebel and they will get what they want, but not without severe consequences. We also must learn not to have people in our government that act superior to the rest when actually they are not any more powerful than any other person in the government. Caesar became king in all but name. He had his name stamped on coins, put his statue in the temple and wore royal purple. (Julius Caesars Rule as Dictator http://score.rims.k12.ca.us/score_lessons/caesar_rome/handout. html) Julius Caesar was making himself king, even when he was not that powerful to have himself put into the position of king. Julius Caesar taught the civilization of Rarlj many laws that this great civilization will use to make its government prosper.
