Analysis of GATE 2012: ECE

GATE 2012 Analysis GATE 2012 (ECE) largely followed the pattern of last year's paper, as previously announced in the GATE 2012 prospectus. The paper consisted of 65 questions with a maximum score of 100 marks. The questions were MCQ type with4options. Every wrong answer incurred a negative marking of 1/3. The question-wise breakup of the ECE paper was as follows:

Engineering Mathematics: 15 marks General aptitude (Verbal Ability & Numerical Ability): 15 marks Core Engineering Subjects: 70 marks

In general, the paper was tougher than last year. A majority of the questions were from Electromagnetic Field Theory (EMT) whereas very few questions were seen from EDC. In terms of the difficulty level, questions from Electronics Devices & circuits (EDC), Analog, EMT, Communication were tougher. It is worth noting that in GATE 2011, EMT was toughest subject. For most of the subjects (like digital, control, network, digital etc) in GATE 2012, weightage allotted was almost same, while the weight-age allotted to EDC decreased from 14% to 5% as compared to last year. One surprise was that there were no questions from 'microprocessors' this year. Last year (GATE 2011) the cut-off marks for this branch were: 26.11 for general, 23.5 for OBC & 17.41 for SC/ST candidates. However, this year (GATE 2012) cut-off is 25 for general, 22.5 for OBC & 16.67 for SC/ST candidates.
