SIOP Lesson Plan Template: The Cha Cha Slide


Standards: 1.1 Understand and follow one- and two-step oral directions.
2.1.1 Listen attentively. 2.1.2 Ask questions for clarification and understanding. 2.1.3 Give, restate, and follow simple two-step directions. 3.1.4 Give and follow three- and four-step oral directions.

Theme: Rhythmical Movements and Activities Lesson Topic: Line Dancing Objectives:
Language:Students will be able to comprehend the simple verbal commands that are being given to them. Content: The students will be able to successfully perform the dance, The Chacha Slide, the song while in rhythm with the song.

Learning Strategies: -Direct instruction -demonsration -scaffolding -repetition -kinestetic Key Vocabulary: -hop -right -left -foot -stomp -slide -cha cha -backwrds -knees -freeze Materials: Stereo and iPod with the correct songs on it. Motivation: -Student involvement -Increased interaction Presentation: 1. Review simple locomotor movements like hopping
2. Introduce nonlocomotor movements like stomping your feet 3. Go over advanced moves like the cha cha and charlie brown. 4. Play a game similar to simon says calling out the dance move and the class repeats it

Practice/Application: .Day 1: Try performing the moves to the music X2-3


Day 2: Review and have students partner up and take turns assessing their dance moves Day 3: I will test the class on performing the dance moves correctly without music then with music

Review/Assessment:Each day we will perform the song together as a big group at least twice before
breaking up into partners.

Thoughts on my Future Lesson

IwrotemylessonforagradeschoollevelPhysicalEducationclass.Thelessonisgeared towardtheprimaryagegroup,soKindergartentothirdgrade.Theprimaryobjectiveforstudentswho arelearningtheEnglishlanguageistostartrecognizingwordsthatareprominentinPEandtheir meaning.Ifeellikethisisaverygoodlessonthatgetsthekidsmoving,tacklessomestandardsforPE, andhelpswithwordassociation.TheprimaryformofassessmentIwilluseissimplyteacher observation.WhenIwasteachingmyELLs,Imadesuretowatchthemandseeiftheywereatleast doingtheactivitycorrectly.BestcasescenarioisthattheyheardwhatIaskedthemtodo,understood whatIhadasked,andperformedthetaskgiventothem.Usually,whatendsuphappeningistheyare mimickingtheirclassmatesandnotreallyunderstandingwhatisbeingaskedofthem.So,anotherform ofassessmentIwoulduseistohaveapeerwatchtheirperformanceofthedance.Onepartner performsthedancetothecuesinthedance,thentheotherplaysthemusicandwatchesandcritiques thedancer.Theythenswitchplaces.Myfinalassessmentwouldbeuseatestandhavemeaskthemto performthemoveswithoutthehelpofthemusicortheirclassmates.ThiswayIcanseeiftheyhave graspedtheconceptofthewordandattachedittothewordbyhavingthemshowmetheycanusethe knowledgetheyhavegainedindifferentsituations.Iwouldnotmakethetestasecret.Iwouldgivemy testtotheirpartners,sothatthepartnerscanusethesameassessmenttoolthatIwilluse.Ilikedthe interactionpartoftheSIOPmodel,soIincorporatedthatbyusingthepeerpartners.Scaffoldingisalso amustwhenteachingdances.First,youintroducethesimplestepsandthenaddonmoredancemoves asthesongprogresses.

Assessment: Cha Cha Slide

Put a check mark if your partner performed the dance move correctly and an X if incorrect. Be sure to ask your partner to do all of the dance moves. Be sure to mix up the order to try and trick them!
