REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING
(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Differentiate between simple air refrigeration system and bootstrap air refrig-
eration system. [4]
(b) For the cock-pit of an aircraft 10 tons of refrigeration is required. The com-
pressed air is available at 4 bar and 370 C. Assuming the cooling turbine ef-
ficiency is at 80% and the air leaving the chamber is at 270 C, calculate the
mass of air required for the refrigeration system. The cock pit is maintained
at 1 bar. [12]

2. A refrigeration plant using F-22 produces 1000 kg of ice at -100C from water at 400 C
per hour. The ambient temperature is 400 C and temperature in the refrigerator is
-200C. The refrigerant enters the compressor at 1000 C. Find

(a) COP of the cycle

(b) refrigeration load
(c) mass flow rate of refrigerant
(d) Power consumption. [16]

3. (a) Give the normal boiling points and designations of floro chloro derivatives of
methane. [8]
(b) Describe the chemical and physical requirements of a good refrigerant. [8]

4. (a) Differentiate between flooded type and dry expansion type evaporators. [6]
(b) Explain the working of thermostatic expansion valve with the help of a neat
sketch. [10]

5. (a) Why the boiling point difference of absorbent-refrigerant should be high. [4]
(b) What is the effect of latent heat of absorbate on performance of the absorption
systems. [6]
(c) What are the desirable requirements of a Refrigent - Absorption pair. [6]

6. (a) Name the applications of steam jet refrigeration system. [4]

(b) What are the limitations of thermoelectric Refrigerator over conventional ab-
sorption system? Explain how thermoelectric refrigerator works. [12]

7. (a) Define
i. Partial pressure of water vapour

ii. DPT
iii. RH
iv. Degree of saturation [4X2=8]
(b) The atmospheric air at 180 C DBT and 70% RH is supplied to the heating
Chamber at the rate of 120m3 /min. The leaving air has a temperature of
24o c Without change in its moisture contents. Determine the heat added to
the air per minute and final RH of the air. [8]

8. (a) Describe any two methods of humidification of air by atomizing the water in
to air, with simple line sketches. [8]
(b) With the help of a diagram, explain the Air washer humidifier and state the
advantages of this type. [8]
