TEEN LIVING Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will help me understand and cope with personal, family, and social challenges. This means I can use positive coping mechanisms to help me address issues that impact me and my peers such as: self-concept, family and peer relationships, personal loss, dating and teenage pregnancy, and child abuse. Using these tools for success, I can take personal responsibility and control of my life. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Recognize and be aware of teenage transitions and how to deal with them positively. Bust myths of gender roles. Appreciate roles and relationships within the family. Be aware of the dynamics of peers and friends. Communicate about adolescent attractions to the opposite sex. Explain and understand the difference between infatuation and love. Determine and be aware of appropriate behaviors related to physical intimacy.

COURSE OVERVIEW This course will consist of a mixture of instructional methods such as lecture, power points, discussions, role playing, guest speakers, out-of-class learning experiences, formative and summative testing, and group participation. Each student is required to contribute a positive attitude to the classroom environment and respect the instructor and the other students in the classroom. This will be a safe environment classroom for both learning and enjoyment.

GRADING: This course is made up of participation, quizzes and tests, and assignments. Participation make up 20% of your grade and includes activities like forums, reader response and short answers. Don't discount this piece of your grade as inconsequential because there are a lot of participation assignments, and they can make a difference. Most participation assignments are 10 points. Quizzes make up 20% of your grade. Typically all quizzes allow several attempts. Your best score is recorded. Tests make up 30% of your grade. Some of the larger assignments and projects are categorized as "tests". Assignments make up 30% of your grade. Note that this category carries the most weight. Assignments range from 10-30 points. LATE WORK POLICY: We work within a ONE WEEK grading period. This means all work is due on the Monday after it is assigned, but will be accepted during the one day grace period until the following Tuesday. This grace period is provided for your flexibility and should be saved for emergencies, sickness, and travel.

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY: I as your facilitator, expect you as a student, a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. It is imperative that you demonstrate a high standard of individual honor in your scholastic work. Any student who commits an act of scholastic dishonesty is subject to discipline. Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, submitting for credit any work or materials that are attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, or any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts. Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any other source, is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the schools policy on plagiarism.
