Bruce English 360 Conference 2: Portfolio Preparation December 4th @1:15 Conference Meeting
Questions: 1. As you can see on our Portfolio Instruction Sheet (available on Titanium), each students portfolio must include one fully revised, major assignment (blog posting, profile, or persuasive essay). Review your work and my comments on these assignments. Which of these documents are you most interested in revising, and why? Which of our student learning outcomes (see page one of our syllabus) could you satisfy by revising this document (and yes, it can satisfy more than one)? Where will you have to focus your revision efforts to produce a document that will satisfy your standards? I am most interested in revising my persuasive essay because this paper was much easier to work with. The topic that I have chosen to do it on was very approachable and easy to find datas. There are several student-learning outcomes that I could satisfy by revising this document. The first one would be the informal and formal writing that I have done before starting my paper. I was able to create a group of ideas and examples to start an outline. The formal part is where I had the revised version of the outline by having the professor check out my outline and see what needed changes. The second would be the sources that I have used to address the problem with my topic. I was able to clearly cite the authors of the quotes used to support my argument. Some changes were made in the citations to decrease the amount of plagiarism. The last one would be the 6th SLO where I have my peers review the work that I have made and include the suggestions made by them. I have used some into context so that I had a better flow with the paper and going to the writing center really helped with the progress of my paper. There are many SLOs that I can use to show that I have understood the goals of writing. 2. Your portfolio team should meet to discuss which major assignment each of you intends to revise. First, each student should pitch their assignment choice to their peers, arguing for its ability to satisfy our SLOs and stating your purpose in revising this document instead of one of the others. Below, summarize your peers comments and suggestions about your choice. Do they agree or disagree with you, and why? How did they advise you? Which SLOs do your peers think your chosen assignment will satisfy? What kinds of revisions do they suggest? I have explained to Rami that I will satisfy all the SLOs by using my persuasive essay as my major assignment for this portfolio. We had both agreed to use my persuasive essay because of the many documents I have provided to show that I have improved my writing skills. For example I had the incorrect use of citations, which is SLO #2 and I have satisfied that by showing a correct and revised version of the citation. Another would be SLO #6 where I had my paper reviewed by a peer such as Rami himself. I satisfied it by showing him what changes I have made from his perspective of my paper. SLO #1 was the informal and formal writing that had to be done for my paper. I have showed him the brainstorming work that I used to begin the argument of my paper and the comments he had provided. I was able to recognize the SLO that he had suggested me to use for my major assignment. For SLO #5, Rami have suggested me to provide a counterargument for my paper so that I am not biased about my topic. As long as I provide evidence for my argument I will be able to achieve this SLO.
