Classroom Planetarium Ms. Ferdene Dela Cruz 5th Grade Science 3 School Days Analyze Learners Total of 18 students. 9 Males and 9 Females 10 - 11 years old Diverse Ethnic Backgrounds: Pacific Islander, Chamorro, Filipino, Caucasian One student with Dysgraphia (writing disability)

Current Knowledge, Prerequisites, and Notes about Learner Attitudes Students understand the essential ideas about the composition and structure of the universe and the Earths place in it. Students must know that the Earth is one of several planets orbiting the sun and that the moon orbits the Earth. Students must know that planets look like stars but over time appears to wander among the constellations. Students must know that astronomical objects in space are massive in size and are separated from one another by vast distances (e.g., many stars are more massive than our sun but so distant they look like points of light). Learning Styles

Visual 30% Visual Learners Auditory (Aural) 30% Auditory Learners Kinesthetic (Hands On) 40% Kinesthetic Learners

State Objectives Students Will Understand the relationship of the nine planets in our solar system to the sun by creating a three dimensional representation Understand the planets relative distance from the sun and their approximate size in relation to the Earth Select Methods, Media, and Materials

Methods Students will be divided into 9 groups of 2. Each group will be assigned one planet. Each group will be provided with a Planet Information Sheet that lists all the information needed to be found for their assigned planet Media TLC Elementary School Documentary Astronomy Educational Internet Websites such as www.nasa.gov Materials Stars and Planets by David H. Levy The Kingfisher Young Peoples Book of Space by Martin Redfern Planet Information Sheet Round Balloons (different sizes) Tempera Paint and Paint Brushes Fishing Line Construction Paper Newspaper Strips (one inch wide) Space Paste (flour and water based) S Clips (used to suspend models from ceiling tile frames) Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods Preview Materials All students will provide 2 newspapers each and construction paper All other materials will be provided by me Prepare Materials Space Paste (Mix of Water and Flour) Stars and Planets and The Kingfisher Young Peoples Book of Space readily available for students to look through One computer with educational websites readily available for students to research information on their assigned planet Bulletin Board with the image of the Sun (using construction paper) placed in the front of the classroom Prepare Environment Ensure that the computers internet is working and that all inappropriate websites are blocked Ensure that each group has books of needed information at their tables Ensure that desks are arranged into 9 groups of 2 desks for students to have enough space to work together without merging into another group Ensure all groups have an equal amount of all materials needed Ensure that the temperature and lighting of the classroom is appropriate enough for the students to work comfortably

Prepare Learners Students will watch TLC Elementary School Documentary Astronomy as an introduction to the lesson plan Provide Learning Experiences Day One Review and Introduction of the Solar System Day Two Creating the Classroom Planetarium Day Three Presentation of Planets Require Learner Participation Day One

Students will be introduced to the lesson by watching a documentary about outer space and our solar system entitled TLC Elementary School Documentary Astronomy. Students will be divided into 9 groups of 2 and will be assigned one planet. Each group will be given their Planet Information Sheet. Each group will work together to research the information listed on the Planet Information Sheet using educational books and website provided.

Day Two Using the information that each group filled out, the students will determine the size of their balloon (big or small) that will represent their planet, the order of each planet, and its distance from the sun. Each student will work together to apply newspaper strips onto their balloon using the Space Paste. After covering the balloon with newspaper strips, each student will allow their planet to dry. While waiting for the planet to dry, they will discuss and determine what color/s to paint their planet. They must keep in mind the physical landscape of their planet. After each balloon has dried, each group will paint their planet. When the planets are ready, each group will hang their balloon onto the ceiling using a fishing line and S-clip based on the order of the planets in the solar system and the distance it is away from the sun. Each group will then attach their Planet Information Sheet onto their assigned planet. Day Three Each group will present their assigned planet and the research they found. Students should explain why chose the color/s of their planet, the size of their planet, and the distance it is away from the sun. They may also share extra information they found about their planet. Evaluate & Revise

Student Performance Students will be evaluated based on their performance while doing group work, the accuracy of the information found, and their ability to present their planets knowledgably.

Media Effectiveness Providing students with appropriate websites and books proved to be successful when students presented accurate facts about their assigned planets Students worked will with chosen groups Students showed interest in the documentary shown in the beginning of the lesson

Instructor Performance Other classes will be invited to visit our Classroom Planetarium. Coworkers can evaluate my performance as a teacher based on what they think of the results of our Classroom Planetarium. Our Classroom Planetarium may be displayed during Parent-Teacher Conference for parents to evaluate the lesson.
