Vulture population are decreasing due to diclofenac o Toxic to the vultures o They ate cow caresses, which caused their death o When they die, the wild dogs ate them, which allowed the wild dogs to spread it By saving vultures, many people can be prevented from rabies By restricting jobs, it will also makes peoples income decrease; therefore many people do not like protecting ecosystems that involves with their jobs o Such as farmers and loggers The first priorities to protect were hotspots that had endemic biodiversity Biodiversity have only been heard/known by 30% of Americans Animals in boreal forests are more vulnerable to being endangered than other arctic regions Seasonal homes, migratory stops, nesting are important ecologically and economically Food, fuel, building materials, recreation, and inspiration come from nature that humans value When they putted prices on ecosystem services, the yearly value outstripped the gross domestic product of all countries combined Most ecosystem services are not used in a sustainable way and they are also declining Natural storms reduces the amount of wetlands and mangrove swamps o Wetlands can filter water, and that can lead to less water pollution and less death due to people drinking unclean water Plumes of dust can be reduced by saving forest and grasslands Many predators are keystone species o They keep other population at an okay amount, so that there are not too many of other species There are no more wilderness that is separated from humans interaction Ecosystems where biodiversity provides services to people in need must be prioritize There is a possibility that some of the current endangered or threatened species may increase in population due to people conserving their habitats It is impossible to return to a pre-industrial period on Earth

The ecosystem have been providing humans with many services. Some of them includes being sources for food, fuel, building materials, recreation, and inspiration. As time passes, these services have been decreasing and some are not being used in a sustainable way; therefore affecting humans negatively. People are now trying their best to save ecosystems because when ecosystems are saved, many threatened and endangered animals population can be increased in the future. Unfortunately, there are some people wh o are upset with protecting ecosystems because their jobs may be affected by it. I was unaware how low the amount of people who knew the word biodiversity was. I knew that not everyone heard of that word, but I was surprise to find out that only 30% of Americans knew it. I think by know the word biodiversity and knowing its importance, then more people will be into conserving the planet. I also think that some people are being kind of greedy by using ecosystem services in an unsustainable way. If people were to conserve more for the planet, then their lives will also be better. I know it is impossible to return to a pre-industrial period on Earth, but people can still conserve and prevent ecosystems from being destroyed. There is hope that by conserving, many threatened and endangered species population will increase in the future.

SO WHAT: By conserving ecosystems, there will be more biodiversity, and tourism will be increased.

SAYS WHO: Peter Kareiva and Michelle Marvier

WHAT IF: What if ecosystems were not conserved? There will be less biodiversity, the economy will be negatively affected, along with the tourism business.

THIS REMINDS ME OF Ecosystem services reminds me of school. Education is free in the United States, but some people abuse it by not caring much for it and using the time in school for other purposes.
