Standard 5: Application of Content

Artifact: Standards Based Lesson Plan Course: ED290-Foundations of Education The Standards Based Lesson Plan that I completed in my Foundations of Education course provides evidence that I have met Hawaii Teacher Standards Boards: Standard 5, Application of Content. For this lesson plan I was required to create a lesson plan that utilized the Hawaii standards and benchmarks, in outlining a specific objective measurably complying assessment. I chose to create a lesson that asked students to identify and describe a current event within the Latin Culture. I collaborated with another future Spanish teacher for this assignment. We began by choosing a motivating assessment that would measure the students ability to identify and describe. We decided that asking the students to collaborate in a small group to create a news clip describing the identified event would be fun and measurable. We followed this action by creating the steps that would walk the students from introduction to final presentation. We also took into account students who lacked resources or had special needs and accommodated accordingly. After which, we compiled a list of topics by which to separate the groups (sports, music, finance) and places to research online. In doing this we wanted to ask our students to identify information, research it thoroughly and present that information to their peers. I have chosen this artifact for standard 5, facilitate learners use of current tools and resources to maximize content learning in varied contexts.5(c). I have found that the use of current tools and resources can increase the learning

value of students contextual learning. We made the collaboration very measurable, so that we could hold students accountable for their specific contribution. We also utilized collaboration because, it is my belief that each of my students will have specific learning strengths; with these strengths they will contribute to the overall learning environment in my classroom. This assignment challenged me to seek out activities that would allow students to identify and describe information in an innovative way. In collaborating to creating a video that would be presented to their peers, and myself, my students were challenged to seek out verifiable information and to understand it to the extent that they could then explain it to others. I believe that this increases understanding of content in my language and culture class and also shows students that this information is applicable within the context of other disciplines like journalism.
