New mural for B&K stairwell

Visitors and employees who use the stairwell at the Cincinnati Health Department main offices (Burnet and King) can now delight in keeping their hearts healthy with a new mural to greet them. This summer, in continuing to make education a priority, CHD welcomed ten student interns through two city youth employment programs. One of those interns, Gabriela Harney-Davila from the Student Internship Academy, was assigned to work in the Health Commissioners Office. During her time she expressed interest in the stairwell project and presented design work to staff. The chosen design showcases vibrant colors, uniting blue skies and nature with the nourishment of fresh produce. It is located between the ground level and first floor.

Elm St. awarded AFIX excellence

Congratulations to CHDs Immunization Action Plan (IAP) staff! The Elm Street Health Center received the AFIX Immunization Coverage Excellence Award from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH). The AFIX approach used by grantees incorporates four key strategies: Assessment, Feedback, Incentives and eXchange. It is widely supported as an effective and recommended strategy and is proven reliable to improve providers immunization service delivery and raise vaccination coverage levels. Eleven other agencies across Ohio also received the Immunization Coverage Excellence Award, and Elm Street is just one of the three in Cincinnati. The statewide program was implemented in 1986.

Back-to-school prep should include vaccines

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) and CHD encourages parents and guardians to schedule their childrens school-required vaccinations now. Marilyn Crumpton, CHDs Medical Director for the Division of School and Adolescent Health, wants to remind parents and guardians that waiting until classes are ready to start could make it difficult to make an appointment with their pediatrician or primary care provider. Dr. Crumpton noted, Past experience has shown us that many students come to school without all of their vaccinations. We encourage parents and guardians to schedule your child or childrens vaccinations now to avoid any unnecessary delays. CHDs School Health Program operates vaccination clinics in Cincinnati Public Schools on an as needed basis. In the 20122013 school year, the clinics provided more than 6,600 vaccinations to students throughout the City of Cincinnati. For information about CDCs current vaccine recommendations, Visit www.cdc.gov/vaccines .

August: National Breastfeeding Month

Research shows that babies who are exclusively breastfed for six months are less likely to develop ear infections, diarrhea and respiratory illnesses, and may be less likely to develop childhood obesity. The breastfeeding campaign, funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, encourages women to commit to breastfeeding. This years campaign addresses four topic areas; Peer Counseling, Paid Family Leave, Maternity Care Practices and Employer Support. CHDs Women, Infants and Children program, or WIC, is a special supplemental nutrition program for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum. WIC also helps women who have children under age 5. To find a WIC office or for information about eligibility, visit www.cincinnati-oh.gov/health.
