Gribs Project

MANUEL NORIEGA LAURA REYES YOSELIN VALDEZ PERIOD 5 TEAM 10

Background Information
What does waste incineration do to the environment ?
Incineration create the

largest source of dioxin, one of the most toxic chemicals. will lead to 3 types of dangerous pollutants heavy metal; unburned toxic chemical and new pollutants.

Burning hazardous waste

Background Information Continued

Which chemical reaction type is involved ?

The chemical reaction that is involved is decomposition. Trash gets incinerated creating a green house gasses that could harm the planet.

Background Information Continued

Why is recycling important ?
Recycling is important

because it reduces trash and does not damage the atmosphere including helping us waste less natural resources.

Purpose
What was the purpose on creating a recycled product ?
The purpose on creating

this recycled product is to reduce less chemicals in our air. This might show how much carbon dioxide is being produce and released into the air.

Procedures
Stuff we used Paper Plastic ( Milk Gallon ) What we did for the project is roll magazine papers horizontally until you reach the other end of the paper. Then weave them ( In & Out ) for the bottom is the same process. For the handles we

fold it in half. if this product was burned it would of made 122.8L of CO2.

Calculations
What type of plastics and papers did you have ? How many moles of each type of materials did you use ? The plastics that we used was Polyethylene and the type of paper that we used was cellulose Polyethylene = C2H4 Cellulose = C6H10O5 0.72gC2H4 1

x 1 mole = 0.026 moles of plastic 28g

25.59gC6H10O5 x 1mole = 0.15796 moles of paper 1 162g

What are the correctly balanced chemical reactions using your materials ? C6H10O5 + O2 CO2 + H2O Balanced Formula for PAPER C6H10O5+6Co2 6Co2+5H2O What are the correctly balanced chemical reactions using your materials ? C2H4+O2 CO2 + H2O Balanced Formula for PLASTIC C2H4 + 3O2 2CO2 + 2H2O

How many grams of greenhouse emissions would have been produced ? GRAMS 0.72g x 1 moles x 2 moles CO2 x 44g = 2.26g PLASTIC 28g 1 mole 1 mol 43.96g 25.59 x 1 mole x 6 mole CO2 x 44g = 41.70g PAPER 1 162g 1 mole 1 mole

How many liters of greenhouse emissions would have been produced ? LITERS 0.72g x 1 mole x 2 molesCO2 x 22.4L = 1.152L 28g 1 mole 1 mole 25.59g x 1 mole x 6 moleCO2 x 22.4L = 122.8L 162g 1 mole 1 mole

123.952L

How many molecules of greenhouse emissions would have been produced ?

MOLECULES 0.72g x 1 mole x 2 moleCO2 x 6.02x10^23 Molecules = 3.09 x 10^22 28g 1 mole 1 mole molecules of plastic 25.59g x 1 mole x 6 molesCO2 x 6.02x10^23 Molecules = 5.71 x 10^23 162g 1 mole 1 mole molecules of paper Combine products 6.02 x 10^23

Calculations oh-oh scenario

0.72gC2H4 x 1 mole = 0.026 mole 28gC2H4 plastic have plastic is limiting 0.47 moles O2 x 1 moleC2H4= 0.157 mole C2H4 1 mole 3 mol O2 plastic need 25.59 C6H4O2 x 1 mole=0.24 paper have 108g C2H4O2

oxygen is limiting
0.47 moles O2 x 1 mole C6H4O2= 0.078 moles need 6mole O2

Calculation Oh-Oh scenario continued

Plastic 0.72g C2H4 x 1 mole C2H4 x 2 moles CO2 x 22.4L = 28gC2H4 1 mole C2H4 1 mole CO2 1.152L CO2

100% CO2 produced

oxygen

10L O2 x 1 mole O2 x 6 moles CO2 x 22.4L = 22.4L 1 mole O2 1 mole CO2

60L CO2

60L x 100 = 48.86% produced 122.8

Conclusion

If we were to burn our project it would have created 112.8L of CO2. That would be 62, 2-litter soda bottles of CO2. We can stop this from happening by recycling our plastics and papers. This will help the atmosphere and mostly our earth.
