Our new Board looks forward to the New Year with excitement! We have recruited representatives of the arts and culture community from every corner of Polk County, and we are turning our attention to finding out what unites all of us in creativity, management and marketing. This will be a year dominated by our effort to organize and carry out a community-based project to give arts and culture in Polk a single, memorable brand, drawn at the grass-roots from the sense of identity and sense of place that is possessed in common by all of our arts and culture constituents. While this could be an end in itself, we want to use it as a vehicle to get to know each and every individual and organization that we represent as the Board of Polks Official Local Arts Agency. We are sure that the growth of arts and culture in our communities has produced, and is producing, potential members whose support and ideas we need, and who need our voice in the halls of government and the conference rooms of businesses. We will be in touch! J. Davis Connor

The Polk Arts Alliance Board of Directors would like to thank the Tourist Development Council and the Board of County Commissioners for their continued support of the Polk Arts Alliance again this year. Their support allows us to continue our marketing our cultural arts assets and the publication of our County arts magazine Art-i-facts, which the public continues to enjoy. Also their support allows the Polk Arts Alliance to continue to advocate on behalf of our county arts organizations in Tallahassee at the Division of Cultural Affairs; partner with our State arts agency The Florida Cultural Alliance; to continue as a council member on the Americans for the Arts Private Industry Council in Washington, DC (putting Polk County on the national arts destination map) giving me the opportunity to continue to bring global awareness of what our County has to offer in the arts and our vast creative industries. We look forward to expanding all of our marketing and branding efforts in the new year as we know this will enhance our future economic growth and prosperity. Im looking forward to a very productive and an exciting 2014! Meri Mass

If youve noticed the posters and fliers around town promoting Polk State Theatres current season, then youve also noticed theres a lot more to them than just dates and times. To promote its 2013-14 season, which as Speech & Theatre Professor Paul Carbonell says is all about love, Polk State Theatre is using the works of artist Leonid Afremov. Afremov splits his time between Cancun, Mexico, and South Florida. According to his bio at afremov.com, he paints using oils and a palette knife. Collectors around the world have purchased his works. Carbonell discovered Afremovs work through a project submitted by one of his students in the spring 2013. Carbonell asked students in his Theatre Appreciation classto create a visual representingRomeo and Juliet; Carbonell will produce the Shakespearian tragedy in spring 2014. Student Rachel Powers turned in a poster-board collage of images that she consideredRomeo and Juliet-esque. In the center was AfremovsClose to You, a brightly colored painting of a couple in a romantic embrace. I was doing an image search for young lovers, and I found that picture, said Powers, who took Carbonells course as an elective. A resident of Polk City, Powers plans on studying in the Colleges Diagnostic Medical Sonographyprogram. I felt like it was a really powerful and emotional piece, and I liked the colors. Carbonell agreed the image was captivating and just about perfect for promotingRomeo and Juliet. Carbonell, though figuring it was a long shot the College would receive permission to use the artwork, enlisted the help of Art Professor Holly Scoggins in contacting Afremov.
10
Much to everyones surprise and delight Afremov agreed to let his work be used not only for Romeo and Juliet, but for all four shows of the season. The 2013-14 season began in the fall with Pride & Prejudice andThe Fantasticks; the season continues this spring with Brighton Beach Memoirs and will conclude with Romeo & Juliet. Polk State Theatre selected appropriate Afremov works to illustrate each of the shows. Afremov said theatre is an art form close to his heart, and he was glad to lend his artwork to help promote the Colleges plays. When I was young, I used to build theatre decorations and props for a local theatre in my city in Russia, said Afremov via email. Afremov was born in Belarus, once part of Russia. I try to support this art form as much as possible. It just pleased me a lot to use a painting for a play. I was glad to help. Powers was unaware that her assignment had inspired this seasons posters, but she was excited to hear it. Its pretty cool. It shows (Polk State Theatre) is open to creativity from anybody. Carbonell hopes to use the talent of Polk State Visual Artsstudents to create the play posters in future seasons. Were trying to change the expectations of college theatre, so that when people come see a show here, they forget theyre seeing a show at a college, he said. We want them to feel that these could have been professional plays at any theatre in the country. To do that, we have to draw people in, and thats where this artwork comes in. We hope it triggers the response of, Oh, what is that, I want to go see this show. Brighton Beach Memoirs will be performed Feb. 5-8 and 11-14, and Romeo & Juliet will be performed April 2-6 and 10-13. All shows are performed at the Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Theatre, 999 Ave. H N.E. Shows are at 7:30 p.m., except for Sunday matinees, which are at 2:30 p.m. Shows are free to all College students and employees, and all high school students, with ID. Tickets for the general public are $8. Box office opens one hour prior to each show. In addition to Polk State Theatre, Polk State Fine Arts includes Music and Visual Arts, all of which enjoy outstanding statewide reputations.

Broadway is a bust
Add to that the average cost of a Broadway show at about a hundred bucks--unless you just have to see THE BOOK OF MORMON, averaging at $193, if you can get one. You could plunk down $300-500 for what Broadway calls premium seats, but as one playwright has said, these seats must be for people in the financial industry. Or gray heads with greener wallets. If Broadway has become a theme park with expensive footlights, the problem screams how do we bring in the locals to our houses of play? Especially younger locals. Audiences are aging, young people arent coming and the millennials cant afford it--or just dont care about it. A youthful generation raised amid a digital culture may prove harder to lure to a live theatrical performance. YouTube, iPhones, X-boxes, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook compete for a younger persons attention. Even if they do come expecting them not to tweet while watching the show can be a challenge. And now selfies? What does that say about whats important
The Fantastics, photo by Thom Altman courtesy of Polk State College Theatre.
A New Reality
Television also competes, on tablets and phones as well. A large slice of this new entertainment is called reality based, whatever that means. Jersey Shore, The Bachelorette, Shark Tank, Project Runway, American Idol, The Apprentice, and the Godfathers of them all, Survivor and The Amazing Race. Its like losing or getting canned is the new theatre. Add the self-flagellation of The Real Wives of Altanta and New Jersey together with Honey Boo-Boo and Duck Dynasty, and you have the New American Taste for Entertainment. Great attempts to lure a younger audience have been made, from AVE Q to VENUS IN FUR. Kids love hearing naughtiness on stage and young adults love watching it. But such attempts are minimal. And that Q-tip audience may soon be emptying their oxygen tank. So, the Real reality should be live theatre, and the Real audience is ages 8-28. If young people arent exposed to music and art, you wont develop either artists or audiences, says Robert Brustein, Artistic Director of The Yale Rep. Theatre needs to be more than just watching. Now its our job to find out how to better do it.

When the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed a grand plan for the campus at Florida Southern College in 1939, he intended to create the first truly American college campus, rejecting the formal styles that were in vogue. Wrights renowned Child of the Sun campus is the largest collection of his architecture on one site anywhere in the world, but several of the designs were never built, including a design for a Usonian house intended for faculty. Now, in a landmark event, Florida Southern has added the 13th Frank Lloyd Wright structure to its campus. The Wright-designed Usonian house is the centerpiece of the Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center, which opened to the public on Nov. 1 and is expected to attract as many as 100,000 annual visitors. The Tourism and Education Center will serve as a visitors center to the Child of the Sun campus, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. In addition to the Usonian house, the center includes the GEICO Gift Shop housed in a refurbished craftsman-style home a specially commissioned bronze statue of Wright, and a fountain designed in the style of Wright. The 1,700-square-foot Usonian house has many signature Wright features cantilevered wooden beams, interlocking textile blocks inset with nearly 6,000 squares of colored glass, and expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass doors that make the beauty of nature an element of the home. Under the direction of restoration architect Jeff Baker of Mesick Cohen Wilson Baker of Albany, N.Y., Wrights Usonian design was updated with modern features and building techniques, but it is otherwise faithful to Wrights architectural plan, making the Usonian house a new window into Wrights genius.
The Tourism and Education Center features reproductions of furniture that Wright designed for use in the Usonian homes and a screening room for a 20-minute documentary film commissioned by the college about Wrights architecture at FSC. Trained staff and volunteers are on duty at the center to conduct tours and provide visitors with information about the Child of the Sun campus. The center also includes a remarkable and rare photograph of Wright by the internationally acclaimed portrait photographer, Yousuf Karsh, donated by Karshs widow. TO VISIT: The Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center is located at 750 McDonald Street, Lakeland. Parking spaces are available in the northwest corner of the lot across the street. Hours: 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday through Saturday. Closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day. Admission to the Usonian house: $2 Polk County residents, $7 all others. Students admitted free with ID. For information about tours of the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture at Florida Southern, visit www.flsouthern.edu/fllw-visitors.aspx. magination. The life blood of the Lake Wales Arts Council brings together members, volunteers, board of directors and sponsors from diverse walks of life to share in their common love for the arts. We are all united in achieving the same goal - to keep arts alive and create the community of our imaginations, explained Barbara Connor, Council president. Headquartered in the renovated Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center, the Councils mission is to build a community where art and culture thrive, enriching the lives of people. Its vision is to create a vibrant cultural arts destination. The Council is alive and well as we expand the many cultural events we present, revealed Connor said as she unveiled the new name for the Citizens Bank & Trust Lake Wales Arts Festival with its new time and date from 10am to 5pm on Saturday & Sunday, March 8-9, 2014. What started as a small art show 43 years ago has now evolved into one of the most respected and successful Festivals attracting more than 22,000 art lovers to the scenic shores of Lake Wailes, Connor added. We are so grateful for supporters like CB&T President Greg Littleton and his team whose time, talent and treasure ensure our success. We have been involved for more than a decade, said Cyndy Andrews, CB&T Assistant Vice President Marketing, Learning & Development. Our staff logs 400-plus volunteer hours planning and working on this event in a variety of areas from parking lot attendees to booth workers. We believe true involvement cant be defined with just a check so we are thrilled with the hands on opportunity this event provides us. Nearly 100 juried artists from throughout the southeast U.S. will exhibit their works in clay; drawing, graphics, pastel, digital; jewelry; mixed media and fiber; oil and acrylic; watercolor; photography; and sculpture, wood, glass and fine crafts. The variety of media, subject matter and style will offer price points for every level of collector who can purchase both high end and affordable art. Artists look forward to the critically acclaimed show because they have the opportunity to win large cash awards, stated Pirjo Restina, Festival chair. We collected more than $11,500 last March for pre-purchased art in our purchase prize program, so artists are guaranteed that serious buyers have made a commitment to purchase artwork. Awards will include the $4,000 Best of Show, $2,500 Judges Award for Exceptional Work and the $2,500 Citizens Bank and Trust Award for Exceptional Work, four $1000 Awards of Excellence, five $500 Awards of Distinction, five $300 Awards of Merit and a new, $500 Peoples Choice Award.

In addition to Connor, Restina and Donaldson, Festival committee chairs include: Pia Griffin, Deely Hunt, Ellis Hunt, Robin Jenkins, Cassie Jacoby, Cheryl Garnett, Elizabeth McWhorter, Theresa Ryland and Shelly Windham. The Festival will feature live entertainment, artist demonstrations and, new this year, a puppet building workshop with Tampabased Bits N Pieces Theater actress and puppet builder Holli Rubin. During his high school years, Jimmy was a member of his own rock band, the Mustangs. Through this early experience he became proficient in sound systems, wiring, microphones, lighting, electrical connections and many other trade practices that go along with performing before an audience. He has a unique, self- taught ability. Someone once asked him to Teach me everything you know. Jimmy replied It would take 50 years to teach you everything I know because it has taken me 50 years to learn everything I know. The Ramon closed in the late 60s, when television became the entertainment of preference. It wasnt until years later that the people of Frostproof came together to make a plan which was spearheaded by the Frostproof Chamber of Commerce, accomplishing the seemingly unattainable goal of restoring the 1925 era Theater. The Ramon Theater is now a dba of the Frostproof Chamber Foundation, Inc., which is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Corporation as designated by the IRS. Now, fast forward to 2008. Soon after the restoration took place the Ramon was ready for events and it is difficult to believe that the first sound system was a karaoke microphone. In the beginning, the Ramon was a nice venue for local community events. The first Music Series programs were performed by local, and Lake Wales artists. But, as each season came and went, more and more people began attending, because marketing was targeted toward a wider audience. Now, 80% of our attendees are from outside the Frostproof zip code, and our need for Jimmys expertise became more and more necessary. Just to mention a few of his accomplishments: Jimmy completely installed a sophisticated sound system; crawled on his belly under the balcony seats to rewire the sound booth; installed a remote control to lower and raise the movie screen without having to climb a wall stepladder to the cat walk; crawled on the ceiling catwalks to replace light bulbs; climbed the mobile scaffolding to install, and change bulbs in the stage lights. He greets musicians who arrive to perform, most times in midafternoon, helping them unload equipment, plug into the sound system, perform sound checks, then stays through the performance and operates the spotlight. Hell still be there until near midnight, helping the band unplug, load their equipment and then closes down the Theater. He troubleshoots problems, paints and does most of the minor repairs needed. He has many more accomplishments, too numerous to list here. He shuns the spotlight and doesnt seek recognition. He just enjoys doing what he loves to do. In addition to the many volunteer hours he gives to the Ramon Theater, he still finds time to volunteer with other civic clubs and organizations such as Frostproof Chamber functions, where he was voted Frostproof Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 2009. He volunteers with the Rotary Clubs Frostproofs Got Talent annual fundraiser, Relay for Life, Class Reunions, Family Reunions and Birthday and Anniversary functions. He also volunteers at First Baptist Church in the sound booth and helps manage their website. Many times, he gets calls at the last minute, when his expertise and equipment are needed, and he gladly assists. And always by his side is Melba, who can operate a mean sound system herself and is always there to support Jimmy. Jimmy and Melba, the Ramon Theater salutes you and your spirit of volunteerism.

Florida Dance Arts Celebrates The 20th Anniversary of the Central Florida Dance Celebration
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Central Florida Dance Celebration. In 1994 the teachers at Highland School of Dance were discussing the local dance environment and the lack of opportunities for students to perform in a noncompetitive atmosphere. They decided what was needed was a weekend seminar involving a collaboration with other dance studios throughout central Florida. In addition to the performance, they felt it was important to bring in a national caliber master teacher to conduct classes for all the participants. They enlisted several area studios in this endeavor and found a home for this new show at Florida Southern Colleges Branscomb Auditorium. As in all things, the inaugural year had its challenges, yet the show went extremely well. Each year since has been a constant refinement and improvement as the groups work to present an outstanding show encompassing all styles of dance. Their second goal of providing master classes for the participants was not realized until the second year, but these classes have been exceptional ever since. This year the dancers have the privilege of taking contemporary dance classes with Kelly King who has an impressive career. Kelly has been teaching and choreographing regionally and in NYC for the past eight years, and performing in NYC for the past 13 years. Kelly was a Radio City Rockette for 12 years where she worked on several different workshops along with teaching Rockette experiences and Intensives. She has performed on stage, television, and film. Her credits include: Gregory Hines In Concert with Gregory Hines, Fosse National Tour, Anything Goes National Tour, Busker Alley with Tommy Tune, Will Rogers Follies, Alvin Ailey, and Sinatra His Way, His World, His Voice. Jay Lenos Tonight Show, Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade, MTV Music Awards, NBCs Wow Awards, Today Show, Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, Exit Independent Film, Pussycat Dolls, as well as Nike and several other industrials and fashion shows in NYC. Kelly was also a resident choreographer and dance teacher at the Broadway Theatre Project for 11 years and is now very excited to start a new adventure with The Performing Arts Project along with guest faculty at Broadway Dance Center. Kelly recently is traveling to teach and set dance pieces at several studios and universities along with freelance work in Florida. The weekend culminates with a performance on Saturday, March 8 at Branscomb Auditorium, Florida South College at 7:00 pm. This is a highly entertaining performance with some of Central Floridas most talented dancers. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $8.00. For more information call 863-221-8181. Looking back on years of planning, learning, and performing, we are fortunate that the Central Florida Dance Celebration has been able to call on the time, energy, and dedication of the sponsoring studios to present such an exciting evening of dance. We are happy to do it for the most important people of all-our audience-without whom this wonderful event would have remained just an idea.

Literary Leanings
The art of the book launch can be a difficult one to master, but in Polk County, local writers take them to a whole new level. A good example was the recent book launch by former Winter Haven City Commissioner Jamie Beckett. On a drizzly Saturday afternoon, leaders from Ridge Art Association and other local organizations and businesses met at the Bean and Grape Caf in the middle of Winter Haven to celebrate Becketts recent publication of Burritos and Gasoline, a fictional work based upon a memorable road trip. In many ways, Becketts book launch represented what makes literary life in Polk County so unique: While attendees hailed from the arts and writing community, many of those present were from other diverse professions and backgrounds. Lake Alfred City Commissioner John Duncan and his family, for instance, drove south to congratulate Beckett on his writing. Others attending included civic group leaders like Beverly Lerner, president of the Winter Haven Toastmasters chapter. Here in Polk County, authors receive support from readers from all walks of life, and Becketts get-together displayed that great spectrum well. Sipping lattes and mochas out of the grey autumn weather, lovers of the written word gathered, conversed, and enjoyed an event completely dedicated to good storytelling. Beckett has also recently published a series of science fiction e-books, and as he signed print copies of Burritos and Gasoline, he spoke of future plans to compile the electronic texts into a single volume: Im thinking of doing five of them, and then selling them as an anthology, he explained. As the publishing world fluctuates between welcoming device readers and staying true to its printed roots, writers sometimes have difficulty surmounting the obstacles of a world that can often be harshly exclusive and difficult to navigate. Small-time authors can face challenges from the behemoth literary marketplace, but for authors like Beckett, You dont write for the money anyway. You do it because you love it and you have something to say. In the end, the little town book launch is much like the small-butexcellent independent bookstore or gallery: Both serve as a reminder that, no matter how consumer-driven our world may become, the passions of creative spirits will always thrive. As 2014 unfolds before us, may our coffee mugs be full, may our muses speak loudly, and may our work be truly great.

a public event that includes performances and a juried art exhibition of student work from grades 1 through 12. Platform KIDS, is scheduled at the Oasis Community Church, 3330 Winter Lake Road, from 5:30 - 8:00 on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014. Veterans and community stakeholders will serve as judges and pick a winning design. Monaco will then fabricate the students vision of Honor into a life-sized steel sculpture for the Memorial Day unveiling and celebration. Monaco explains, I was approached earlier this year by Cynthia (Haffey, executive director of PlatformArt) to assist her in bringing this incredible, collaborative project to life. The idea of using public art to not only bridge the gap between generations, butfoster a sense of community by involving the Polk county schools, the veterans association, the city of Lakeland, and local artists seemed almost too good to be true. I think it could be a model for any city that wants to integrate more local art into its public parks and communal areas. A flexible mechanism for connecting artists, benefactors, and community leaders is rare, and having a group like Platform, which can facilitate the marriage like some artsy matchmaker, is a great asset. While Platform looks at the big picture, coordinating the different groups and personalities, my role is really to guide the teachers and their students. I will be helping steer the practical considerations in creating the student sculptures so that the chosen artwork can be realized in full scale exactly as designed by the student artist. I do not want to color their work with my own interpretation when I render it in full scale. In my mind, the purity of the students artistic vision is one of the most important aspects of the project. The finished artwork should be a wonderful representation of both the symbol of Honor it represents and the collaborative process that made it possible. This years theme, along with others for future years, emerged from a focus group made up of representatives of the Lakeland Veterans Association led by retired veteran and City Commissioner Don Selvage, Veterans Association leaders, representatives from the City of Lakeland, and other community stakeholders. Platform is thrilled to use the imagination of our young people to recognize our veterans commitment to honor, duty, citizenship, and sacrifice, said Haffey, and we look forward to its realization.

See, you dont hire a village to design your show, just an expert.Take a look yourself at the marvelous history of Polk Countys premiere costume designer. She is justsewgreat. Camille McClellan
Costume Designer
Camille has been working in the theatre since she was six years old, starting on stage in operas at Troy State University in her hometown of Troy, Alabama. She studied theatrical costuming and clothing design at the University of Alabama. After college Camille joined her husband in Dallas, Texas where he was working toward his masters degree in theatre at the Dallas Theatre Centre. She began working as a free-lance costume designer while managing Collections, a high end clothing store, in Highland Park Village. Camille also designed a line of childrens clothing (DuBop) for six seasons while in Dallas. Since 1981 Camille has designed and constructed costumes for more than 400 productions of ballet, opera, theatre and dance combined. Her love for producing designs for dance was sparked at the Dallas Ballet in 1985. Hired to do the finishing decorative work for Swan Lake, she was asked to stay with the company. She learned tutu construction and design, as well as construction techniques necessary for the comfort and movement of the dancer. She is one of only a few specialists in the country trained in the construction of European-style classical ballet tutus. Camille moved to Miami 1987 as a master tutu maker for Miami City Ballets second season. During her two seasons with MCB Camille produced the dye work for the costume designer, managed the shoe stock and worked as backstage wardrobe mistress. She had the pleasure of traveling with the company overseas and throughout the United States as well as working at the Gusman Theatre, MCBs home performance space. In the fall of 1989, Camille and her young family moved to her husbands hometown of Lakeland, Florida where they still reside. She is currently resident costume designer for Theatre Winter Haven, and produces designs for Southeastern University, Florida Southern College, Polk State College and numerous other companies.

This photo of Bok Tower was taken by Saddi Khali, a photographer, writer and performance artist who spent a month in late 2013 as the Polk State Lake Wales Arts Centers first artist-in-residence. During his stay, Khali photographed scenes of Lake Wales for a new collection that will be on display at the Arts Center from Jan. 27 to Feb. 24, in honor of Black History Month. His work will also be on display the entire month of February at the Polk State Lakeland Art Gallery. Both exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Lake Wales Arts Centers Michael Crews Gallery is open 8am to 6pm Monday-Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturday. The Polk State Lakeland Art Gallery is open 10am to 2pm Monday-Thursday.
