Letter of Introduction

Past

Today I standing in front of you a man of twenty-three. The University of Washington is my second higher educational
home. Community, Environment and Planning is the fourth subject I have desired to study. The reasons why I stand
before you today are dramatically different to the reasons my teenage self wanted to be at university.

Originally, university for me was just a period of transition where I was to grow as a person; a time to get a better
understanding of who I was. Though the experience was helping me grow, I still felt light years away from answering the
more important questions. What am I meant to do in life? Should I pursue a life of purpose or a life of happiness? These
questions dominated my mental sphere, and while in the midst of depression I found myself devoting much of my time to
studying about Spiritual Philosophy, Theology and travelled considerably. For me it was my time at TERI and my travels
that were the times when I really made headway. I wasnt just getting back on track: I was evolving. I attribute my
progress to being fascinated by different cultures and traditions. Understanding how different communities work together
and how the individuals role changes from society to society. This was where I found myself gaining answers to my
questions. Additionally, I felt great fulfillment in working towards a goal for others and not just myself.

Present

Now, I have my answer, The only problem now was that since I had reached the next step, I found myself asking, what
use did I have for university? Armed with passion, conviction and clarity, I asked myself, Why shouldnt I dive into the
deep end and begin my existential journey?

The reason was simple. I as an individual, despite having a vision of the life, desired to lead. However, I lacked the
knowledge, the experience, the depth of understanding to begin the life of my ambitions. To gain these, to mature my
conviction and to grow into the person I need to be I decided to exile myself from the city I call home and come study at
University of Washington. I needed the ability to study a variety of subjects and have my understanding tested; to be
surrounded by individuals who shared many of my passions; to be immerse myself in a culture whose foundation are
based on the cultural and ethnic diversity that resemble the makeup of the world and to be a stones through away from a
landscape that reminds me of the beauty of our planet. But most importantly I need to be taught, trained and mentored by
the right people, and that is why I am here.

I feel my interests in my selected area are derived from a combination of sheer curiosity and a sense of real responsibility.
In my opinion, all education must be catered towards a certain purpose. Normally, individuals carve their education by
their interests. Like others in the program, I feel my area of study and the way I relate to it, is so complicated that no
traditional subject can envelop its complexities. The two phrases I use most commonly to describe my pursuits are
Sustainable Development and Cross Culture Communication.

For me, it is impossible to be educated; one can only be better prepared. This is because in life, learning never stops. At
the moment, my attention is particularly invested in becoming more dynamic, reactive, adaptive and most importantly
being able to make intelligent decisions. In essence, I feel it is necessary to work towards becoming a leader. One who is
analytic and empathic. A person who is both knowledgeable, and who can always set aside his pride to recognise value
and initiative in others. I wish to work with others to enable communities to help each other. I know my answer lacks
technical and academic substance, it goes without saying that I feel it is vital to study a variety of different disciplines. I
feel one must better understand different cultures; study different practises of sustainability; understand new technologies
and using these faculties to work towards helping communities with the problems they face. Being more knowledgeable
in these three sectors would definitely make me better prepared, and will also aid in understanding the way resources
should be better allocated.
Future

I recognize that I am very far from my ideal educated person. But for now, I have decided to concentrate my energies
towards starting my social enterprise RuralBoost in North East India, the focus of which will be to work with local
communities to empower themselves to become more independent and sustainable. Our first project is developing a Mini
Cold Storage Unit (Senior Project). This is just a stepping-stone; next steps hopefully will include providing education
and other ammentieis to the people of these remote regions. Here I have designed a study plan that I feel provides a
framework that will take me towards achieving my goal.

Autumn 2011

CEP 300: Retreat
In the major we participate in four CEP Retreats. These in my experience focus practising and
developing skills in Team Building, Communication, Planning, Reflection and Personal
Development.

CEP 301: The Idea of Community
In this course we have been examining different philosopher and idealists from Socrates to Bakunin.
From them, we have been exploring different theories on community and individuality. This course
was also facilitation and discussion oriented, which gave us the opportunity, to explore working in a
community while absorbing (not always consciously) the characteristics of the theories we were
studying. Though, contextually, the course had few ideas that were new to me, I did however
extremely enjoy the course content. It was interesting to formally recognize how these thinkers have
had their hand in the development of our society. In addition, the format of practical education forced
me to adapt and really aided in my understanding of communication management.

SISA 210: Rise of Asia (D)
I really enjoyed this course and feel extremely lucky to be taught by Professor Hamilton, who is
without a doubt one of the best teachers I have ever had. This was also my first formal academic
experience of learning about South, South East and East Asia. The focus of the course was between
the periods of pre-colonialism to present day. It was extremely interdisciplinary, as we learnt about
the changes that happened in the continent through, Historic, Economic, Cultural and Sociological
perspectives. I have learned a great deal about the emergence of globalization, as well as about
cultural patterns within various Asian countries. It was most interesting to learn about different
dynamics in the different spheres of life, within these countries as well as the emergence of such
different economic, social and political regimes despite there existing strong foundational similarities,
be it Historic, Cultural or Religious. This course has really attributed towards me learning about
different management structures, economic structures, social constructs, a very good understanding
of Capitalism and Capitalist markets, it has brought my attention to different agrarian systems and
technologies as well as the community dynamics within different Urban settings in Asia.

URBDP 498: Planning as Profession (M)
Another fantastic class, where we got to listen, and discuss with professionals from different spheres
of the planning profession. Despite being only a one credit class. What Ive learnt here is directly
relevant to the work I want to pursue with my organization in relation to Sustainability: Social,
Community and Environmental. Furthermore, I found speakers to be very inspiring and I discovered
new ideas and avenues to deal with several problems, even including conflict resolution. The reading
as well has been a real education towards understanding the relationship between People and the
Environment and the importance around them. This course I feel was so useful, I have decided to
study it in Winter 2012 and if I am lucky as an auditor in Spring 2012 as well.

(Please note: In addition to my credit classes I will try to participate as Auditor, for several courses.
This comes out of a decision to be responsible with my family and my financial spending. As I will
be well over the credits requirement when I graduate. Furthermore, I feel being an auditor gives me
the benefit of learning without the extra academic responsibility. All in all allowing me to
compliment my other courses for the best possible results.)

Winter 2012

CEP 302: Environmental Response
Prior
In this course we will be learning foundational knowledge of the threat of Climate Change, and
Human response in order for adaptation. In addition we will also accumulate GIS Skills, which in
planning, is regarded as a real asset. Furthermore, The problem of Climate Change is intimately
connected with ideas and concepts of Sustainability. By looking at adaptation we will be considering
how communities will have to be redesigned in order to combat the threat. I am sure this will involve
looking at both Urban and Rural sectors, recognizing how society will provide for itself all the
resources, like Food, Raw Materials and Energy.
Post
This class was quite different to what I imagined. In many ways it fulfilled the ambitions and the
expectations as I have mentioned above but the focus seemed quite different. Other than a strong
introduction into ideas of climate change, mitigation and adaptaion strategies as well as an
understanding of how

URBDP 498: Planning as Profession (M)

PB AF 403: Professional Leadership (M)
Prior
The course is about cultivating practical skills that are required to lead within various organizational
contexts: managerial strategies for public, non-profit, and business organizations. In this course we
will have the opportunity to learn and develop through case studies and guest speakers. The course
focuses on analytical and ethical approaches to problem solving and the communication skills needed
for effective leadership.
Post
This class was very interesting to me. I feel like I learnt a lot in class particularly from the lecturere,
the guest lectures and the course booklet. Though, I regard this as the most challenging class Ive
been in since I joined UW. I feel the self understanding I have achieved and the influence of Ms.
Bullitt is quite life changing and will be a real asset in my future endevours.

ARCH 498: Special Projects (M) Mobilizing Solar Energy
This was a fantastic class and a great opportunity to learn and practice some new skills. In addition to
learning about Solar Energy, the technology and the potential, we also learned about effective
marketing and communication. Also as the project had a design element I got to practice how to be
innovative and influence in the design process without being a hindrance to the design teams. I had
the opportunity to work in groups, practice charette style brainstorming, and work with students from
a diverse background of academic fields who all contributed towards planning and designing the Sun
Dawg project: A transportable, information kiosk focussed on education around Solar Energy. This
class was very helpful in directing me towards avenues which are extremely relevant to my work in
Sustainable Rural Development.

CEP 303: Social Structures and Processes
Prior
Investigates use of formal and informal social structures and processes within context of community
and environment. Looks at patterns and institutions of social organization and relationships among
different sectors. Issues of interrelatedness, citizenship, knowledge, and communication.
Post
Good course in developing and practicing practical skills. Learnt about urban planning techiques,
how to interact with communities in the planning process. In addition, we had the opportunity to
practice in different teams, and also our communication skills. I was able to use lessons learnt from
the class when conducting some preliminary research for a project in North East India.

SISA 499: 0nueigiauuate Reseaich (ueneial Elective)
The last part of my research on Food Production, Cuisine and Culture. Here I finally set focus on
India, where I use the knowledge Ive gained to draw comparison between the agricultural system
found in China, Italy and India. Food Security, and Storage as well as sustainable farming is quite the
problem in parts of India, where some statistics suggest India loses over 20% of its produce because
of bad storage. I investigated market factors and price volatility of potatoes in East Khasi Hills
district of Meghalaya. With this research I was able to identify distribution systems, weaknesses in
available infrastructure and also gain a good understanding of the work being done by the local
government to help farmers. My conclusion was that the Government is trying very hard, however
the communities are growing dependent on them and NGOs. Only a few individuals are taking the
education and using this to change the way they farm. These individuals are very successful. The
government hopes for others to follow, however I am not entirely sure the community as a whole is
aware of these successes.

cultural changes that had been taking place especially in Shillong. My impression is that the
traditional ethnicities, which have well defined values and ideology are now struggling to recognize
or define aspects of identity. This is primarily because of secular changes in society that have come
as a product of Christianity, the emphasis of a high quality education for most individuals as well as
Shillongs development as an academic haven which has attracted individuals from all over the
region and country resulting in making Shillong becoming a real melting pot of ethnicities. This
diversity has lead to a huge populous of mixed raced individuals. Mixed marriages often result in
confusions between patriarchal traditions and the matrilineal system (local traditional system). This
was very interesting especially to understand the identity crisis faced by several was perhaps a direct
consequence of the traditional definition of identity being rooted in tribe and ethnicity, as mental
separation from others was always important to the tribes in the region.

Internships
I was hoping to attempt two Internships between now and graduation in 2013.

For my first internship I am hoping to work with a Micro Brewery in Seattle in either Autmn 2012 or
Spring 2012. I feel this would be a great experience, especially as it will compliment my courses and
research on Food Production, Food Systems and Culture and will be particularly relevant for a
project in Sustainable Entrepreneurship in Sikkim, Meghalaya or Mizoram.

However, I was only able to do one internship. This was In Winter 2013 with the Meghalaya Rural
Development Society, under IFAD and the horticulture department in Shillong, Meghalaya. I
developed an impact analysis report for them for their Potato related programs in East Khasi Hills
which was also very useful as it complimented my research. Furthermore, I learnt about the NGOs
work culture in India, which was very helpful in me understanding where to take my next few steps.

Senior Project

My Senior Project was to design a Mini Cold Storage Unit as well as create a business model for this
endeavor. My Senior Project is part of my social enterprise RuralBoost.

Here is the Abstract from my Senior Project Write Up.

"This ieseaich began as an attempt to unueistanu how factois like foou technology,
infiastiuctuie, communities, anu maikets exist in iuial iegions in Asiaueveloping countiies
anu fuitheimoie to analyse how they might be impioveu. Fiom this ieseaich, I ueciueu that the
simplest anu fastest way to help iuial communities in Inuia was by auuiessing the foou stoiage
pioblem, which accounts foi up to 4u% of national foou waste annually. Specifically, foi my
senioi pioject I uevelopeu a concept mouel anu a business plan with a feasibility iepoit foi a
small-scale foou stoiage solution that incoipoiates weighing equipment. To uevelop the uesign,
I assembleu a team of aichitects anu a civil engineei anu cieateu a mouel of the foou stoiage
system baseu on local aichitectuie, inuigenous mateiials, anu easily available technologies. The
uesign phase was also integial to unueistanuing the cost involveu in the pioject anu how the
system coulu fit within local communities. Foi the business plan, I uiew fiom publisheu iepoits,
best piactices, anu inteiviews with acauemics anu piofessionals in stait-ups, founuations,
chaiities, social enteipiises anu othei ethical businesses. Ny hope is that this pioject will
pioviue a simple anu stiaightfoiwaiu solution to a wiuespieau pioblem in Inuia anu othei
iuial contexts, allowing faimeis to pievent foou loss , ,moie accuiately gauge how much
