Major depressive disorder. Panic disorder. OCD, PTSD, social
anxiety disorder, Generalized anxiety disorder.
Inhibits neuronal uptake of serotonin in the CNS. Has little effect on
norepinephrine or dopamine.
Antidepressant action, decreased incidence of panic attacks.
Decreases OCD behavior, fear, helplessness, or horror, social
anxiety.
Ordered for: Depression
Contraindications/warnings/interactions
Hypersensitivity, MAOI therapy, New warning: Increase the risk of
bleeding with NSAID’s, Aspirin, and other drugs effecting coagulation.
Common side effects
Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, insomnia, tinnitus, anxiety,
emotional lability, weakness, palpitations, constipation, dry mouth,
nausea, tremor

Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine
medicines (ask patient specifically)

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this

medication
May cause drowsiness or dizziness, avoid CNS depressant drugs or
alcohol, contact physician about taking other meds with Sertraline,
frequent mouth rinses or sugarless gum relieves dry mouth, notify doctor
of nausea, weakness, anxiety or insomnia, wear protective clothing when
exposed to sunlight.
