About this ebook

Imagine our Earth as a huge playground:
Instead of climbing frames, there are skyscrapers. Instead of see-saws, there are mountains and valleys. Instead of swings, there are mazes of streets to explore; and instead of roundabouts there are trams, cable-cars and subways.

Seeing the world from this perspective is the gateway to the most exciting, entertaining and memorable travels you can have. That's why we wrote Playground Earth, as an invitation to let everyone's inner child be free. Although it has been specifically designed for families on holiday/vacation, the games and ideas in the pages will be of benefit to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

Who will enjoy this book?

° Parents who love travelling. The adventures can continue once you have your own family and be even more fun if you use the ideas and games in this book.
° Children who want adventure. Can there be a better way to boost confidence and open minds than by being real-life explorers?

° Families travelling on a budget. With your own imagination and the games and ideas provided in this book, there will be no need to rely on expensive zoos, theme parks and waxwork museums to keep your children amused. However, the book does contain ideas for enhancing those experiences as well.

° Anyone who is looking for things off the tourist trail. Crowds seem to flock to the same honeypot sites in the same destinations which can make travelling stressful and disappointing. With this book the focus is on the fun you can create with your travels rather than just going where everyone goes.

° Families wanting to do more stuff together. You can avoid that tug of war between what children and adults want to do by using the games and ideas in this book which will allow you to both have fun and explore a new destination.

° Anyone, any time, any place. Playground Earth is not just for travellers; it's ideas and games can spice up any experience, from a rainy Sunday afternoon at home, a long queue in the supermarket or the school bus ride.

This book shows you how to have a blast on your travels and with only a playful attitude, an imagination and the bare minimum of expenditure. It will also inspire your own games and ideas in the future.

    A Final Word

    Introduction

This book is for anyone who likes travelling and likes having fun. It has grown from the idea that it doesn't matter where you travel, but how you travel. You can have just as great a time exploring your own home town as you can going on an expensive holiday/vacation abroad (as we're British, we'll use holiday from now on).

Although anyone can play the games in this book, we have aimed them towards families with children, for three main reasons:

If parents are on a tight budget, going on a holiday that pleases everyone can seem like a challenge. It's not. By treating the earth as a playground in itself, you hardly need to spend anything at all.

We don't think adults need to separate their lives into 'being a young, free backpacker' and then 'being a serious worker with a family'. Parents who enjoyed exploring the world can keep doing it, and find that children enhance the experience rather than put an end to it.

Fun times spent with the family are the best of memories. We want to encourage the idea that you don't need a place like Disneyland to make a holiday fun. Children naturally love playing games, exploring new places and using their imagination. This book is written to help adults get back into that same playful mindset, so everyone can share the fun.

    Using the Book

For easy reference, we have grouped the games in the Table of Contents by travel activity (Explorer Games, Games for Rainy Days and Souvenir Games and so on). Use that to help you quickly find a suitable game, but don't feel restricted by those topics. Lots of the games would work well in a variety of situations.

We have also given each game an appropriate age range of 5+, 7+, and 9+. These are just rough guidelines and many of the games would work for younger children or could easily be simplified. The games are also all inspired from games the authors have played themselves, meaning that adults can play them without children. There's no upper age limit!

You may find that you can take ideas straight from this book and make them work straight away. That’s great but it would also be wonderful if this book inspired you to invent your own games, rather than being an instruction manual. Adapt any idea in this book to
