Breakdown of the OSSLT

A Study Based on the 2010 and 2011 Literacy Tests


The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is written by grade 10s every year either late in March or early in April. This years test will be on March 29, 2012 Breakdown: Section 1 Category Reading Description Reading comprehension Skills Booklet I (75 Minutes) - Answering multiple choice comprehension questions - Identifying the main idea and supporting evidence in a short written response AND/OR - Developing your own idea as evidence in a short written response AND/OR - Summarizing the key point(s) of a selection in a written response Multiple choice on - Know and apply rules of writing/grammar in multiple choice rules of writing Short writing - Creating a main idea and support evidence opinion response Writing a news - Using W5+H report (given a title - Writing in the third person and picture) - Writing in news report format Reading - Answering multiple choice comprehension questions comprehension - Identifying the main idea and supporting evidence in a short written response AND/OR - Developing your own idea as evidence in a short written response AND/OR - Summarizing the key point(s) of a selection in a written response Booklet II (75 Minutes) Writing a series of - Using essay format paragraphs (given - Paragraph/sentence structure an opinion - Creating an argument and supporting it with evidence question) Multiple choice on - Know and apply rules of writing/grammar in multiple choice rules of writing Reading - Answering multiple choice comprehension questions comprehension of a longer selection Reading - Answering multiple choice comprehension questions comprehension - Identifying the main idea and supporting evidence in a short written response AND/OR - Developing your own idea as evidence in a short written response AND/OR - Summarizing the key point(s) of a selection in a written response Short writing - Creating a main idea and support evidence opinion response Graphic text - Answering multiple choice questions about a graphic text (i.e. comprehension graph, instructions, etc.)
