LAWS OF EXPONENTS

1. Product Rule for Exponents:

To multiply powers having the same base, keep the base and add the
exponents.

Rule: xm.xn = xm+n

anb n = (ab)n

Examples:
1. 23 24 = 23+4 = 128
2. 32 42 = (34)2 = 144
3. 44.43.42 = 44+3+2 = 262,144
4. 92.53 = (9.5)2+3 = 184,528,125
5. 64.74 = (6.7)4 = 3,111,696

2. Power Rule for Exponents:

To find the power of a power of a base, keep the base and multiply the
exponents.

Rule: (an)m = anm

m

an

m
a(n )

(an) = an/m

a1/n = na

Examples:
1. (23)2 = 232 = 64
2. 232 = 2(32)= 512

3. 2(26) = 26/2 = 8
4. 81/3 = 38 = 2
5. (33)4 =23.4 = 4,096

3. Power of a Product Rule

To find the power of a product, find the power of each factor then multiply the
resulting powers.

Rule: (xy)m = xmym

Examples:
1. (ab)2 = a2.b2 = a2b2
2. (2x2)3 = (2)3. (x2)c = 8x6
3. 2(3a2)3 = 2.33 . (a2)3 = 2.27.a6 = 54a6
4. (-x2)3 = (-1)3.(x2)3 = -1.x6 = -x6
5. (2a-3)2 = 22.a-6 = 4/a6
