Test- please disregard this data. I really liked it. It was fun and there was a variety of different projects and things to do. We did labs at home and labs in school. We had lab partners but sometimes did the labs on our own. We had a very exciting science class with many experiments and demonstrations. It was an organized, fun class. Through this course I have learned a lot from Mrs. Palmer. She has been such a help with studying for quiz's, tests, and our exam. Mrs. Palmer is always in her classroom at lunch to help us when ever we need help. My experience in this class was very good, because throughout this course I have developed tenacity because in the beginning of the year when ever something was too hard I would just give up and go home but in this class I have learned that when something gets to hard you do not quit and go home you stay and take as long as it takes to get it done. I have also had a great experience in this class because of Mrs. Palmer. Mrs. Palmer is always there when you need help weather it is with science or with life. Mrs. Palmer is the only reason why I am still at Newark Academy. In this class you are always able to do well as long as you study ahead of time and take good notes in class. Even if you start out doing badly, you can always do better in the next assessment which is something Ms. Palmer makes sure we know. This school year has taught me lots of new things and the teacher in the course has taught them in many different ways. Every day is new and the assignments are different and helped me understand and learn in many different ways. The labs helps me interact with what I was learning and the class would never get me bored with the new material we were learning. The class was fun in many ways but also informative. I had an ok time in class. Although Ms. Palmer did not like to go in depth on discussions of the course material, she did get a lot of information into my brain. In the beginning of the year I dreaded going to science class, but when we moved on to astronomy I had a lot more fun in science class. In this course, I have had a pretty good time so far. The teacher explains material clearly, although sometimes not fully. The material has been made interesting and fun by the teacher, and easier to learn. The learning environment has been pretty good, although sometimes when the material is theoretic or confusing, the class doesn't understand, and the teacher doesn't really explain why or how. I feel as if the teacher grades rather harshly for the amount and level of material that is taught, and some students grades suffer greatly because of this. It has been a good course. Sometimes I wish that expectations for projects had been easier to find and a little bit clearer. On one project I did not know where the expectations where so I did badly because I was missing important information. Also on some projects I did not know that they where being graded so I wished that that had been expressed. I have learned so much in this course so far. It is a very positive environment with students eager to learn. In class we do

many activities to help our understanding of each subject. Also, if we have any questions we can go to Mrs. Palmer at lunch. We do many labs and worksheets that help me understand the material better. 10 At first this year, I did not have the best experience in this class. I did not do very well and did not understand what we were learning. Throughout the year, I have progressed and learned how to become a better science student. Ms. Palmer has helped me a lot with that. We both worked together to bring my grade up and help me better understand the material. This course was good, and I learned a lot. But I feel Ms Palmer sometimes limits our curiosity. For example, sometimes when we ask questions she doesn't answer them because she thinks it is wasting time. Also, Ms. Palmer is unfair in the way she punishes people. Another thing is that I feel like I'm not learning that much. Most of the stuff we are learning I have already learned. Otherwise, Ms. Palmer has been a good teacher and explains things well. My experience has been very varying. In the beginning of the course, we went through very basic material: What is a force?/What is motion?, and I feel that we could have gone faster through that. However, in the middle/the end of the course, the material was really fun to learn, and I learned a lot about the big bang theory that I did not know, as well as a lot about space and the planets in our solar system. This course has been okay. The material is a little challenging, but Ms. Palmer has explained it well. The course is pretty interesting. Overall, I enjoyed it. We study a wide variety of topics and there is a lot of different assessments. I enjoyed the course very much, I really enjoyed the astronomy part. I think Ms. Palmer really helped explain the material in a positive way, that encouraged learning. I think that the experiments really helped explain the material in a interactive way. Interactive Discovery has been a lot of fun. I have had a good experience in this class. Although it is a REALLY challenging course, it's been a good experience for me. This class has taught me how to manage time better and knowing when seeing the teacher is necessary. Jan 6, 2014 6:46 AM

Test- please disregard this data. It was helpful because on the test I was able to understand and explain concepts better while using examples from our experiments. I always loved to have examples. The assignments that Mrs. Palmer gives us can be challenging, but Mrs. Palmer will always help you learn the material for the homework. The in-class activities and labs help me understand the material and develop my skills because in class if we have trouble Mrs. Palmer will always help us and she will always teach us and meet with us if we have trouble with the material. The assignments help my understanding of things less that the in class activities do because the labs and activities are usually more detailed and explain more about the subject that we're learning. I like the in class activities because they give you extra practice of the subject that you're learning in class so that when the time comes to start studying for a test, you already know what you're going to be studying and how to do it. Because there were so many different assignments and activities it gave the class variety and engaged me into what we were learning. With the many activities I could work with any situation like a lab or science log or whatever I was doing. I also had to put some thinking into what I was doing so the answer wasn't exactly always there. This helped my skill to problem solve and think. The group assignments also engaged everyone into the activity and the class never bored me. Unfortunately, I did not fully grasp many of the concepts taught in class, namely applications of the formulas. I did some work on my own and got a little help from friends to prepare for the exam. The in-class activities happen very often, with the science log every day, and reports and assignments due a lot. The activities always help jump start the lesson for the day, while they may be time consuming and in some cases, rather unnecessary. The assignments are almost always reading or filling out a sheet which can easily become monotonous work, that one does not desire to do. The skills developed are almost always the same ones, teamwork, creativity, and learning. It would be a lot more fun of a class if it were to vary a little from time to time. very effectively, when we did the carnival of forces lab it had to do with what we where doing in class it demonstrated the properties of forces well so I could understand them better that when they where just being drawn on the board. I think that most of the activities and labs help me understand and develop my skills. One category of activities that I don't think always relate to the material are science logs. Some relate to the material but sometimes I feel like some are just to fill up time in the beginning of class and barely have anything to do with the subjects we are learning. All the lab reports helped me so far, especially the at home motion and forces lab.

Everything that we do in class helps me understand the material better. Ms. Palmer always makes sure that the activities always will help us prepare for our assessments. All of the activities help you understand the material in a more hands-on way, rather than just notes on paper. I find that helps us a lot when studying. The in-class activities mostly help me understand the material. However there were a few things that didn't help. One example was the roller coaster project. Though it was fun, it didn't help me understand motion and speed any better. They are very effective. For instance, the questions for the roller-coaster project really made me use your knowledge of momentum and velocity, as well as the forces I used. Also, the sun model helped me learn the layers of the sun. The reading assigned could be confusing though. The assignments and in-class activities are very helpful for understanding the material. Every day we do a science log, which gives us the opportunity to gain a little knowledge about what we will be later discussing. However, the labs are not very helpful. I am often confused about what I should be learning from them and don't feel any better about the material once I have completed the activity. The in-class activities are alright. They aid the class in understanding concepts through building models and doing short experiments. The labs are better because they usually pertain more to the topic we are discussing, and require some more thought. I don't really think the homework helps that much, because it is usually just reading the textbook or completing practice problems. For me, it is really just busywork. The science logs in the beginning of class usually relates to the lesson she is teaching us today. It helps prepare everybody for the lesson being taught. The material in the class is challenging but the Science logs and the homework have made it easier. The projects, on the other hand, aren't as effective in teaching me the material.

Test- please disregard this data. I like the way we take notes. When we take notes most of the stuff that we say and do tend to stick in my head and it makes it easier to study. We always discuss our notes and learn actively instead just sitting and copying from the board. I have also found my notes very neat in science this year because of our note taking, It makes it easier to study instead of having to constantly search my binder for loose papers. Binder check are also very helpful because they force students to be organized and they also alert the student of any important missing papers. What I didn't really like about the course was the science log. It was supposed to demonstrate what the teacher will be teaching that day and serve as sort of an experiment. But for me I The most effective thing for me about Mrs. Palmer's teaching is how she always goes over everything multiple times to help us and also Mrs. Palmer meeting with me at lunch and going over all the material always helps me to study and to learn the material, also that Mrs. Palmer dose a lot of in-class activities and videos to help us. What has been least effective for me about Mrs. Palmer's teaching is that Mrs. Palmer dose not always answer all of you questions because a lot of the kids in our class answer them for you and it is annoying. The most effective part of Ms. Palmer's teaching is how she projects the notes onto the smart board so that if you miss something when taking notes you can always look at the board to make sure. I also like how if you don't understand something you can always go see Ms. Palmer at lunch about it. The least helpful part about Ms.Palmer's teaching has been how sometimes when we start a new subject, we don't always know what we're supposed to do. The most effective thing my teacher has done to teach my class is the enthusiasm and new situations we were put into. We were always engaged and could ask questions frequently making it a great place to learn in. Ms. Palmer takes a very group based approach in class. I think she expects us to go to her independently with individual needs, which is understandable. She does not go on lengthy discussions about the course material nor things related to it. She takes the almost Soviet approach of, "Here's what I have to say, memorise it. The most effective thing about this instructor's teaching is the notes and powerpoint slides she places on the smart board for us to copy down. They can be studied or reviewed at home, and are usually self explanatory, leaving you with the knowledge to understand them. These types of lessons usually end with less questions, and more understanding. The least effective thing about the teacher is the demos. These are almost always met with questions about relativity, and "what-if's". I personally just get confused with the demos, which always leave me more dumbfounded that before about the subject. The hands on experiences and demonstrations were better than just taking notes. However when we took notes in class we knew that kinds of answers that where expected. The least effective was when we were being explained stuff without writing it down so I missed information.

Page 2, Q5. What has been most effective for you about this instructor's teaching? What has been least effective for you about this instructor's teaching?

The most effective thing about Mrs. Palmer's teaching is all the notes we write. We write notes in our textbook and on notebook pieces of paper that I can always look back on and find what I am looking for. We write notes on everything that is on the quiz or test and the only things we don't write notes on is the detailed paragraphs in the textbook that we bookmark. The least effective thing about her teaching is when you meet with her at lunch. She says we can come in second half and she is always there as she promised but there are also many other students who need help. Sometimes there are so many students in her room, I cannot even ask the question that I came there for her to answer. The meetings at lunch are definitely the most effective thing with Mrs. Palmer. Most Effective: Ms. Palmer is always willing to help. She comes in everyday during lunch to help us. Whenever I have a question I can always go to Ms. Palmer for help. Also, what she says is always very helpful. Least Effective: When we have a reading assignment for homework, we never really go over what we have read that much. We just read it and are just expected to understand. I felt like this more towards our astronomy unit than our forces and motion unit. The most effective thing is the fact that Ms. Palmer is able to explain the material very well. The least effective thing about Ms. Palmer is her unwillingness to answer anything even slightly outside the course material. The least effective thing about this instructor's teaching was the do-Now.The most effective way Ms. Palmer taught was when she gave us packets with blank spaces, and went through the packet with us. We could later study with the packet, and also writing the answers helped us remember. Ms. Palmer uses canvas a lot which is very helpful. The least effective things are that she is almost impossible to meet with alone, she has very unclear expectations and Ms. Palmer creates a learning environment that feels almost childish. Also, I feel as if everything is in groups or as a class. I usually get distracted during those circumstances and work better alone. Most: I like doing labs and projects because they allow some room for creativity as well as the opportunity to explore the topic on my own. Often, I find out things that have not been taught in class. I also really like the current events assignments for the same reason. Least: When Ms. Palmer just teaches us normally it doesn't really do all that much for me. I have noticed that when my classmates and I ask questions, she usually just repeats what she said before, or repeats it in slightly different words. It doesn't really help to understand what we are learning at all. I think how positive she is about our learning, but that can lead to other people being distracted during class. Most: Positive attitude Respect for students Variety of assignments Least: Level of difficulty in assignments Level of grading (really harsh)

Test- please disregard this data. The one that was most helpful was the carnival of labs. I really liked it because it helped so much on the test. I didn't like the take home lab because it was sort of confusing because some of the options were really hard. The labs that we did that were most helpful were the motion lab(create your own lab), and the rollercoaster lab were the most helpful labs we did. The least helpful labs we did to me was the carnival of forces lab was the least helpful for me. The most helpful lab was the Carnival of Forces lab because it gave you a lot of practice with forces and definitely increased my understanding of agents, receivers, non-contact forces, and contact forces. I thought all the labs were helpful because they all increased your understanding of what we're learning in class. I think the labs that took the most time helped me understand the most because they took more thinking than usual and made me focus a lot than a small lab. Bigger labs had more variables and took more time and in the end taught me more than a smaller lab. The first lab we did, one on motion, did not require a lot of actual work although we then had to write a lab report. It was ok although it did not have any applications of the various formulas we learned in class. The Carnival of Forces was a very good lab, as it included fun and learning about forces. The motions lab was the least effective, and the roller coaster lab was the most effective. The carnival of forces was most helpful. The questions after we had done the project had to do greatly with what we had just done. The roller coaster lab was the least helpful. we did not have enough time the expectations were foggy and the project was stressful. Instead of having a fun spirit week I had the worst week of school I had all year. The at home motion and forces lab and the carnival of forces packet helped me the most because it really helped me understand the material. The least helpful lab was the balloon rocket lab. Most: The Carnival of Forces lab was very helpful to me because it really demonstrated the forces so I could have a better understanding. If we hadn't had that lab it would have been a little confusing to me. Least: The least helpful lab was the balloon rocket lab. I didn't really understand what it was trying to teach us. It felt like we were only doing the experiment for fun. The most helpful lab was motion lab. The least helpful was the roller coaster lab. The rollercoaster lab was the most helpful. The least helpful was the motion lab.

The roller coaster lab was not helpful in the least bit. It was very stressful because we had very little time and there was a lot of work to be done. The Carnival of Motion lab was also not very helpful because we were very rushed and not able to learn. All that my parter and I were thinking about was getting the lab done. The motion and speed lab was more helpful. We completed it at home which gave us an opportunity to go at our own pace and there were a variety of choices of activities that we could do. The Carnival of Forces lab was probably the most helpful, because we learned a lot about forces with no prior knowledge. The lab we did for the science log to model the expansion of the universe was probably the least helpful, because about half our class understood this already and the model didn't really help all that much, given that we had already learned about Hubble's Law. The carnival of forces lab helped explain force in a simple way with multiple experiments. I think the least helpful lab was the roller coaster lab it didn't really relate to the topic that we were learning, it took up a lot of my time trying to make that coaster. The one lab that we did, the motion lab, was not very helpful or successful. I think it was worth too many points and was very useless according to the majority of the class. I didn't learn much from performing and writing that lab.

Test- please disregard this data. I definitely think the kids doing the roller coaster needed more time to build and make their roller coasters neater and more elaborate. The poster board space project was also kind of overwhelming. Another good thing to do would be to space out the roller coaster project and the test because it was very hard to do both at once and the students had other classes to deal with. Other than that, the course was very well spaced. The average workload Mrs. Palmer gave us was very reasonable because she would only give us one homework assignment a day/night and she would give one or two projects a unit, and one or two current events a unit. Yes, the average workload was reasonable. It wasn't too much or too little work, giving us the right amount of practice. The average workload was very reasonable and I would never have a night where I had too much homework or too less. Very reasonable, the assessments were announced far in advance and she made the workload just right. Yes, it was not hard to manage, but not to little that I blew it off. Yes we usually had 30 minutes or less of work and sometimes we did not even had homework. Yes, the workload was reasonable. I just think that for some big projects she did not give us enough time like the roller coaster project we only had a few days. Otherwise, the workload was fine. Most of the time the workload was reasonable, sometimes there were things that took more time, but that is expected and that does not happen everyday. Yes. But it could have been slightly more on some days (like when we just have to read 5 pages) Yes, though during the rollercoaster project, the workload became immense and my group had to spend many lunches and some time after school to work on it. Most of the time we received very reasonable workload. Yes. There was never too much work that I felt overwhelmed or anything. I felt that some work was very challenging though. Yes. We had a good amount of homework. The only thing I would say was unreasonable was that we were given less than a week to research, make a poster on, and learn a presentation on a planet or something else in space. Despite the in-class work time, I think a large amount of our class had difficulty putting it all together.
