Danforth Scholarship What specific qualities come to mind when you think of this student?

I dont know what other people think of me, but I hope that I am thought of as a compassionate, dependable, and hard-working student. How has this student made an exceptional contribution to his or her community? Throughout my high school career, I have been very involved in band and debate. Both of these activities are big parts of the Ferris Community and I feel like my contributions to both activities have really contributed to the community. When it comes to contributing to the community of Spokane, I have done volunteer work at a couple of different sites. During sophomore and junior year, I volunteered two hours a week in the Traumatic Brain Injury Unit at St. Lukes Rehabilitation Center. I got to see a wide variety of patients pass through St. Lukes doors and I felt like I really helped out an important part of the community. My best contribution to the local community has probably been my work at the Volunteers of America in Eastern Washington. I volunteered this summer as a grant writer/researcher. Over the summer, I researched a wide variety of grants for Hope House (VoAs homeless womens shelter) and Crosswalk (VoAs teen shelter). I successfully applied for $20,000 during my time at VoA. The work I did for Hope House taught me a lot about homelessness in Spokane. During my time at Volunteers of America, I felt like I was improving the state of the community. How does this student exhibit personal integrity, leadership, and academic excellence? I exhibit personal integrity and leadership in my extracurriculars. I am a leader in all of my extracurriculars and I hope I have proven myself as a dependable student by sticking with debate and band for four years. I hope that I have proven my academic capabilities through my hard work in rigorous classes. How do you assess the potential for this student to be a leader in her or his future career or community? I have gotten involved in a variety of leadership roles in my current community. I am the only four-year member of debate and the team captain. I also worked on the People to People Student Advisory Board and played a leadership role there. I think that the potential for me to be a leader in college is very high because I have sought out a leadership role in every one of my extracurriculars.
