A Study on Seleskovitch s Triangular Model of Interpreting

by ZHANG Jiliang
Abstract: Danica Seleskovitch, representative of the Paris School, claims that percept ion/
comprehension, deverbalizat ion and expression const it ut e a t riangular model of int erpreting rat her than a
linear process of messag e/ sense transfer. T his art icle, by tracking t he generation of this interpret ing model
and ref lect ing upon it s theoret ical values and deficiencies, argues that t his very t riang ular model, t hough
failing t o elaborate on the hypot hesis of deverbalizat ion and how linguistic informat ion is processed in
interpret ing, is a bold theoret ical innovation w hich helps accelerat e t he cognit ive psy chological t urn of
internat ional int erpreting st udies and serves as great inspirat ion for t he emergence of ensuing informat ion
processing models of interpret ing. T hen the art icle, based on t he t heories of modern cog nit ive psychology,
proposes that t he processing of linguist ic inf orm at ion in interpret ing is accomplished t hrough t he
combination of controlled and automat ic processing, serial and parallel processing and top dow n and bot tom
up processing.
Key words: interpret ing; cognit ive psychology; t he P aris School
