Monday Topic: Project Introduction Tuesday Two-Day Lesson: Factoring Quadratics Benchmark Lesson Factor ax + bx + c, when a = 1, and discover the patterns in signs.
2
Wednesday Two-Day Lesson: Solving Quadratics Benchmark Lesson Solve quadratic equations of form ax2 +bx + c = 0 when a = 1 by factoring.
Type of Lesson: Introductory Lesson Objective(s): Understand what is SWBAT expected of them in the project and complete a detailed plan of their project. Engage Video: http://www.youtu be.com/watch?v=d IlQVgc2Tak. Pose Challenge
Formative Assessment: Commit and Toss. Ask students about the path of the paper ball when they tossed/shot it. Discuss quadratics and their graphs.
Explore
Ask students what they think the relationship between acceleration, velocity, distance, and height. Have students record their predictions and complete a KWL chart.
Factor with team/sticky notes Put sticky notes on Posters Visit each poster with team and complete handouts
Fill in the Gap worksheet. Students will be given 5 minutes to work alone on the worksheet. Once 5 minutes are up students will be given 10 minutes to work with partner/team.
Hole in One Videos: No bounce: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=ThGpb bogaU8 2 bounce: http://www.youtube. com/watch?v=X06IR P2SREw Give students Task 1; instruct them to get to work with their teams.
As a class, discuss with students how their projects are going. Answer any questions students have.
Students should complete Task 1 (and the presentation that goes with it) with their teams.
Explain
Pass out the rubric and pose the challenge again. Explain to students why they are doing this project. Pass out the parent letter and field trip information.
Students will share their work/findings/results. Synthesize findings as a class. Go over 2-3 examples. Teach Me How to Factor Video: http://www.youtube.co m/watch?v=OFSrINhfNsQ
Elaborate
Students will share their work/findings/results. Discuss students work; whose approaches are correct. Go over 2-3 examples. Watch 1st part (up till 2:15) of Do the Quad Solve Video: http://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=jGJrH49Z 2ZA Basketball Problem.
Evaluate Pre-Test that covers factoring, solving quadratic equations, and requires students to create a concept map given just the nodes. Assessment(s): No assessments
Exit Slip that requires students to generate the quadratic function for the roots that are given.
Students create a hypothetical golf video game with 3 holes. They have to write the code for hole in ones using quadratic functions. Discuss the importance of starting the presentation for this portion of the challenge.
Pre-assessment: (Formative Assessment 1) Commit and Toss Formative assessments via questioning throughout Lesson Poster Handouts Post-Assessment: Exit Slip PowerPoint, Posters, Sticky notes, clip boards, copies of handouts
Formative assessments via questioning throughout Lesson Fill in the Gap handout Post-assessment: Exit Slip (Formative Assessment 2) LGI

I do, You two do: I will solve an example problem, students will choose a partner to complete an example problem from 5 example problems.
Video: http://www.thirteen.org/g et-the-math/thechallenges/the-setup/11/ Pose Challenge 1: http://www.thirteen.org/g et-the-math/thechallenges/math-inbasketball/introduction/1 81/ Complete Web activity: http://www.thirteen.org/g et-the-math/thechallenges/math-inbasketball/take-thechallenge/184/ Students will complete their own Web Quest, but they may work and talk about the problems with the students sitting next to them.
Discuss students findings from previous day for Elton Brands stats. Pose same challenge but students have to pick new stats.
Students will complete their row on a class chart with their players name, initial vertical shooting velocity, and release height.
Complete Web Activity: http://www.thirteen.org/g et-the-math/thechallenges/math-inbasketball/try-otherbasketballchallenges/186/ Students will complete their own Web Quest, but they may work and talk about the problems with the students sitting next to them.
Determine the height of the basketball for their players best free throw shot. Generate a quadratic function to represent this best shot.
Explain
I will choose student pairs to come and present how they factored or solved an example problem.
Elaborate Allow students to ask any clarifying questions or to ask for additional problems to be solved.
Evaluate
Assessment(s):
Exit Slip with one quadratic for students to solve using the quadratic formula. Formative assessments via questioning throughout lesson and student demonstrations of example problems Exit Slip
See how the teams solved the challenge: http://www.thirteen.org/g et-the-math/thechallenges/math-inbasketball/see-how-theteams-solved-thechallenge/182/ Each student will watch the video individually. Research initial vertical velocity and release height in basketball. Provide an answer to the following questions: -What are some common initial vertical velocities when shooting a basketball? -What is an appropriate release for people with the following heights 60, 63, 64, 66? Exit Slip: Students should turn in their responses to the above questions. Formative assessments via questioning throughout lesson Exit Slip
See how the teams solved the challenge: http://www.thirteen.org/g et-the-math/thechallenges/math-inbasketball/see-how-theteams-solved-thechallenge/182/ Each student will watch the video individually. Look up Gator basketball team. Each student needs to choose a player and research their stats.
Briefly discuss how students work is coming along. Provide suggestions as needed.
Let students continue working on their project (Task 2) and making their presentation.
Exit Slip: Turn in their players name and their stats. Formative assessments via questioning throughout lesson Exit Slip Formative assessments via questioning during Field Trip
Discuss the importance of working on the presentations outside of school. Formative assessments via questioning throughout lesson
