GeorgeEugeneMitterwald(bornJune7,1945in Berkeley,California)isanAmericanformerprofessional baseballplayer,coachandmanager.Heplayedin887 MajorLeagueBaseballgamesfortheMinnesotaTwins andChicagoCubs,primarilyasacatcher,over11seasons (196619681977).Mitterwald,nicknamed"theBaron," threwandbattedrighthanded.Hestood6feet2inches (1.88m)tallandweighed195pounds(88kg). MitteerwaldplayedforskippersBillyMartinwiththe 1969TwinsandJimMarshallwiththeCubsof 19741976.Afterhisactivecareerendedinminorleague baseballin1978,Mitterwaldbecamethebullpencoachof theOaklandAthleticsin1979underMarshall,thenwas retainedwhenMartinreplacedMarshallasOakland's manager.HecontinuedtoserveinthatpostunderMartin forthe19801982seasons,thenwasagainhiredby MartintoserveastheNewYorkYankees'bullpencoach in1988,Martin'sfifthandlasttermastheYankees' manager.
