CypherneticswasacommercialtimesharingcompanybasedinAnnArbor,Michigan.Aswasthecasewith anumberofcommercialtimesharingoperatorsinthe1970s,CypherneticsutilizedtheDECsystem10 computersystemsfromDigitalEquipmentCorporation.Thecompanyalsohadasalesofficesinmostmajor UScitiesandmanyinternationallocations,providingcommunicationsandtechnicalsupportforclients. Cypherneticsdevelopedmanyproductsthatwerewellaheadoftheirtime,andwhoseconceptsarecontained inmanyofthemostimportantPCapplications,eventoday.Cypherneticshadanemailsystem(called UTI:MEMO)intheearly1970s,aswellaswordprocessing(Cyphertext),spreadsheets(Cyphertab),project management,andtimeseriesdatastorageandanalysis(TSAM).DespitecomparativelyweakCPU's,very limitedmemoryandstorage,andslowcommunicationsnetworksofthetime,mostmodernPCapplications werefunctionalonthetimesharingnetworkat300to1200baudwhilerunningonaprocessor(thatwasmuch lesspowerfulthanadesktopPCistoday)sharedby50+simultaneoususers. CypherneticswaspurchasedbyAutomaticDataProcessing(ADP:www.adp.com)in1975andrenamed ADPNetworkServices.ThebusinessdidverywelluntiltheintroductionofthePC,anddeclinedafterthat.
