Week 1 The Structure of the Solar System Day 5 Objective: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the structure

of the solar system by taking an online quiz and through a creative writing piece. California Standards: Science 2.g Students know the role of gravity in forming and maintaining the shapes of planets, stars, and the solar system. 4. The structure and composition of the universe can be learned from studying stars and galaxies and their evolution. As a basis for understanding this concept: c. Students know how to use astronomical units and light years as measures of distances between the Sun, stars, and Earth. e. Students know the appearance, general composition, relative position and size, and motion of objects in the solar system, including planets, planetary satellites, comets, and asteroids. Materials: MacBooks Microsoft Word Wiki access and accounts McGraw-Hill Online Quiz access

Projector Speakers Guided Instruction: Tell students they will be taking a two-part quiz today. The first part consists of an online quiz on Lesson 1. Show students how to access the link found in Chapter 11 resources, Day 5, http://glencoe.mcgrawhill.com/sites/0078741858/student_view0/unit4/chapter11/lesson1/ Students should print out their results to hand in. The second part, which will take up most of the period, is a creative writing piece. Read over the directions for the writing piece: Using Microsoft Word, write/create a dialogue between crewmembers on an alien spacecraft as it approaches and enters our solar system. Keep in mind that the alien crewmembers might consider our solar system an unknown star system. What might they be looking for? What are they going to see/notice? Must be 1 2 pages in length and include descriptive and significant details/terms about our solar system. When students are done writing they will create a Wordle, http://www.wordle.net of the writing piece and upload it to class Wiki. Show students an example of a Wordle on the website Tell class they will be listening to Gustav Holst Venus. Independent Activity: Students will first take an online quiz (5 questions), print the results and hand it in. Students will access Microsoft Word to start writing, copy paste to create a Wordle and upload the Wordle to the class Wiki http://www.wikispaces.com
