Design of a rotor blade for axial flow turbomachine

Objective: Become familiar with basic design aspects of an axial flow rotor section,
and perform preliminary study of the section in a stage (stator/rotor)

Design:
1 From the table of X and Y co-ordinates around the blade profile (rotor) given below in
non-dimensioned form (against chord, C), plot the generated blade:

Assume a chord length (C) of 100mm.
Marks 5%

2 From the plot of the generated blade calculate the blade angles at leading and trailing
edges
Marks 10%
3 Calculate the stagger angle setting for the section for a rotor at blade mid-height radius
of 500mm for the following conditions:
Incoming flow entirely axial at Mach number of 0.793
Rotational speed 3000rpm
(Assume suitable values of thermodynamic properties and conditions for air)
Marks 15%
4 Discuss assumptions made in the calculations and their effects on the errors in design
Marks 10%
5 If this rotor mid section is operating at a design value of 50% degree of reaction show a
realistic representation of the stage. Assume an axial gap of 15% chord between stator
and rotor
Marks 10%
6 Discuss the generation and effects of Shock on the performance of a compressor blade
passage
Marks 25%
7 If the rotor blade is rigidly fixed at the root and a tangential load (assume a suitable
load value) is applied at the tip mid chord what will be the stress pattern on the blade.
Show by means of sketches the stress pattern (assume a blade span of 200mm)
Marks 25%

Report Submission:
One individual report needs to be submitted by 4PM, 9 th January 2014. Individual should
hand the report to the Faculty of Technology Advice Centre in Gateway House 0.4a. The
report should be addressed to your tutor (Prof. U Singh). The individual should keep a
copy of the report and a copy of the receipt as proof of submission. Marks will be
deducted for late submission.
