dream of being able to climb the Citadel. The main theme of the book is unity gets greater results than individual results, since mountaineering is all about teamwork. As seen in when Rudi left Franz and Captain Winter while climbing the Wunderhorn. Rudi tried to find another path, an easier route down the mountain (p.66-67). At first everything was going smoothly. His footing was solid on the granite until it started crumbling . he jumped and landed on a platform pretty far bellow the ridge he was on. Franz, along with Captain Winter, had to help carry him back up to the ridge. From this experience it can be seen how Rudis decision to do things on his own, lead to his downfall in the chapter. Another incident where Rudi made a selfish decision was when he decided to go up the Citadel past the fortress all by himself, instead of going back down to Kurtal and facing his uncles anger and his mothers tears. He climbed up all the way past the fortress but then a snow storm started brewing and he had to find shelter, in the cold, all alone with no food. By the time he got back to the hut he was badly injured. His clothes were in tatters, he had bruises everywhere and was completely exhausted. Although he did find the key to the fortress he risked his life in the process(p171,p.137-163). He was blinded by the summit of the Citadel. Rudi went back to his old selfish ways when he left Franz and Captain Winter in order to catch up with Saxo. All in all it can be seen that most of the book led up to Rudi

learning to not be selfish, because in the end he didnt summit the Citadel so that he could help Saxo who had a broken arm.

OUT OF LIVES Its been 3 days since Arabella has been admitted to the hospital. She had breast cancer and had to undergo surgery immediately. After some checks, she was proclaimed cancer free. But the cancer spread, and is now in her lungs. Her mom was devastated when she heard the news . Arabella was even more devastated. She was only 13 and still had a whole life in front of her. She was a straight A student and was very popular amongst her fellow schoolmates. She had a good future ahead of her yet she only has 4 more months to live. Shell have to take Aerostisin, the cancer is already too strong, too immune said Dr. Oleander But Doctor no one has ever lived through Aerostisin replied Zahara, Arabellas mom worriedly Im sorry maam, at the moment that is all we can do if we wish to prolong her life. If her body is strong enough she would be able to live for another additional month. The removal of her whole right lung is possible nevertheless it would be very risky yes but if it doesnt succeed, she wont even live! said Zahara well it is completely up to you maam said Dr.Oleander you know better than I do Doctor, please do whatever you think is best replied Zahara Arabellas organs are not in such good condition, if she undergoes chemotherapy with Aerostisin her body can shut down. Dr.Oleander himself knows that but there is no better treatment she can undergo at the moment. He has thought about asking his older colleagues and professors but then he thought no they would think that I am ineligible to take on her case and replace me with another

doctor, if Im able to find something by myself I would get much greater credibility and make a huge breakthrough in science sure, it was selfish and he knows that but its not like he would kill Arabella by doing this. He has been studying about lung cancer over the past decade. No one knows it better than he does. If anyone can perform a surgery alone, its him. The other surgeons eventually heard about the case, it was the biggest topic buzzing around at the hospital and they knew how hard the case was, no one has ever survived aerotisin or at least not yet. There was a knock Sir..uhm..I mean Dr.Oleander, we heard about your case and would like to offer you our help. Weve been researching about Arabellas type of cancer, we found something that might highly benefit you if you do decide to remove her right lung ad perform a Pneumonectomy said Dr.Joyce, a much younger surgeon I appreciate that but Im not going to perform a Pneumonectomy, Im going to prescribe the drug aerostisin to her instead Dr.Oleander replied with all due respect sir, is that not too risky? No one has ever lived through aerostisin said Dr.Joyce I think I know what Im doing Joyce he replied yes, yes of course you do sir Im sorry for doubting said Dr.Joyce apologetically and with that she went out of his office. Arabella was treated in the ICU, she needed help from machines in order to breathe normally because her cancer was getting worse. She underwent chemotherapy with aerostisin a few weeks ago. She didnt die but her bodys immune system shutdown. Her skin was burnt and she had bruises all over her body. Her scalp turned black in color and was as hard as a helmet. The bruises took days and some even weeks to fully heal since her bodys cells was not functioning as it should be. It would take

another 5 chemotherapies in order to control her tumor but her organs are not strong enough to take on that drug once more. If the chemotherapy is continued her organs would fail and she would die almost immediately. Cancer can be seen like a survival video game. It is either the person dies first or the cancer cells die first. The only way to win is if your bodys cell is stronger than the cancer cells. To kill the cancer cells they use chemotherapy which can be seen like a power-up in a video game. The only difference is that unlike power-ups in a game, chemotherapy does not only kill cancer cells but also your bodys cells, the ones that keeps you alive. If seen from a video game perspective, Arabella is on her last life. If the simplest thing is done wrong, shell run out of lives. There is no more room for mistakes. Dr.Oleander can be seen as someone who wants to get a high score in the video game . Hes taking a huge risk by not wanting anyone else to help him. If he succeeds hell be greatly appreciated by his colleagues and Arabella but if he doesnt hell be back to square one. Dr.Oleander had no choice, he had to perform a pneumoctomy and remove her right lung completely through the thoracotomy method because her tumor is located in the central area of the lung and involves the 3 lobes on the right so it cannot be treated by a removal of a smaller portion of the lungs. The operation would need another surgeon to operate along with Dr.Oleander. Other surgeons were willing to help him yet he rejected all of them because of his pride. He felt that he was better than everyone and it was true, he was better than everyone but he could not operate on a major surgery alone. He ignored all his logical thinking, it was clouded by his pride and arrogance. He was selfish and did not think of the outcome clearly. He wanted to be the first ever surgeon to have performed a major surgery alone. It was a rainy Monday morning, half past twelve in the afternoon. It was the day of the surgery. A lot of the other surgeons were there to watch the surgery done by the

one and only Dr.Oleander. Some medical students also came by to take notes on the operation, this type of surgery was not performed often because of its high risk so the professors wanted the students to actually be able to see it . It was a big event. Arabella was brought away to the operating room and was given a general aesthetic to dose her off. A tube connected to a ventilator was placed through her mouth so that she could breathe while the surgery was ongoing. Dr.Oleander then made a long incision along her side following the curve of her ribs. He then spread her ribs and removed a portion of it to be able to reach the lungs. When her lungs were exposed a little, he collapsed the lung that contained the cancer then he tied and sewn the major blood vesels and arteries shut. Afterwards he removed the lung. Everything seemed to be going on smoothly until he realized that one of the major blood vessel was not entirely sewn shut. Dramatic ammounts of blood started flowing out. The other surgeons who were watching quickly changed and went to help stop the bleeding. They tried their best to stop it but it was too late. Her heartbeat stopped within a few seconds. time of death..one thirty.. said one of the surgeons caue of deathextreme blood loss from surgery.. said another one of the surgeons Dr.Oleander removed his gloves and surgery apparel and left swiftly. He was disappointed in himself. He cannot imagine telling the news to Zahara. If only I let the other surgeons help me, this would have never happened he said to himself. He went in his office and slammed the door shut. The next day he went to the room of the surgery from the previous day. He saw that one of the medical students left their notebook behind. He opened it and saw conclusion: being a doctor means being able to work with other doctors and collaborate, if you are selfish you will not only be a disadvantage to yourself but also

to other people written on the bottom of the last page. If only he knew that from the start. And with that he went, heading toward the direction of his office so he can break the news to Arabellas mom.
