SPANISH 2 Profesora Maricela Elizondo

My intention for this course is to bring the real world into the classroom by having our chicos share their Spanish related interests in class and correlate Spanish to their personal interests. Whereas in Semester one, we learned the present tense of the following verbs: ser, estar, gustar, tener, mirar, comer, beber, vivir, along with vocabulary terms associated with family, months, days, seasons, weather, food, and beverages, in Semester two we will be building on these themes and adding the past tense of these verbs. Materials: It is important for students to come to school each day prepared to learn. Students are requested to have a notebook, paper, pens, and a system for organizing their work, such as a binder or series of folders and perhaps most importantly an open mind, attitude, and enthusiasm for learning something new. The instructor can provide any school materials a student may be lacking. Topics & Projects:** (Subject to change) Snapshot Travel Brochure Recipe Rap/Poetry Scavenger Hunt El Diario

Homework: Students will be responsible for checking edModo to review class notes and homework. Written assignments will be turned in in-person. Students are encouraged to study 20 minutes a day on Rosetta Stone or Quizlet at home. Homework completion is fundamental to reinforcing class learning. Projects & Presentations of Learning (POLs): As mentioned above, projects will serve as the main entry point to learning and in-depth understanding of content. They will vary in content, duration, and expectations, as well as the degree to which they transcend the classroom. Students will execute multiple POLs this year, at the conclusion of a project, in addition to a year-end POL. The format of these POLs may include role playing performances, quizzes, presentations, videos, school-wide exhibitions of work, and evening and weekend events. Project description and grading rubric will be presented to students at the start of each project . Tiered Instruction: At times, students will be grouped by ability level following the ski proficiency designation format: Beginners with no or little exposure to Spanish will be in the Green Diamond Group; Intermediate learners with 1 to 2 years of exposure to Spanish will be in the Blue Diamond Group; and students with advanced Spanish proficiency (Spanish and/or Heritage speakers) will be in the Black Diamond Group. This system allows for a class structure where students receive more individualized attention and targeted lesson plans.

Mondays: mixed groups; presentation of vocabulary, oral and reading comprehension, oral questions, videos Green group Tuesdays Wednesdays Thursdays teacher practice computer Blue group computer teacher practice Black group practice computer teacher

Alternating Fridays: quizzes and role playing.

Group Instruction: At other times, students will be grouped with a mix of complementary competencies and skills. For example, for the VIA projects, we have groups where an advanced Spanish speaker, an advanced tech savvy student, and two or three creative students work together to create videos, chats, and other communications with other students internationally. Technology Based Learning: Each student will quantify their progress on either www.quizlet.com or Rosetta Stone (RS). Quizlet does not require a microphone, does not require an account, and students can enter specific topics to study. Some students prefer RS, while others prefer the Quizlet website. Each student can work at their own pace. Every student is set up with a RS account. Although not required, a laptop/tablet and headset with a microphone, if available, is recommended to be brought to class to ensure Rosetta Stone time is used to its maximum potential. Students will be required to demonstrate their progress by completing two units of Rosetta Stone (RS) by weeks end or preferably during their scheduled computer day. Students can access their RS accounts at school or at home by visiting www.hightechhigh.rosetta.stoneclassroom.com and entering
their username (consisting of first initial, last name, then 2017. i.e. melizondo2017), and password (123456).

Virtual Interactive Avenues (VIA): Students will be utilizing Virtual Interactive Avenues. VIA supports the learner and teacher effectiveness related to the acquisition of foreign language skills and cultural knowledge by leveraging technology enablers and using virtual environments to reach K-12 students. VIA is a global professional, educational, and social network for participating teachers and students. It is not open to the general public. Please visit the www.viavenues.org for the full description of all the possibilities VIA has to offer our students. VIA includes: Video Conferencing Virtual Classrooms

Grading Policy: Because we have a wide array of learners, from novices to advanced speakers, grading will be heavily weighted towards classroom participation. An A student, regardless of Spanish skills, is one who is actively engaged in lesson discussions, makes concerted efforts to participate in group work, is on-task during class and completes work on time. Conversely, a failing student, regardless of their Spanish skills, is one who is behaving poorly, creating distractions, carrying on side conversations, turning in incomplete or late work. In order to gauge how much a student has learned and what skills and knowledge have been mastered, assessments will occur in class in a variety of ways. Many assignments will earn points in very traditional and familiar ways. On the other hand, some of what is done and learned will not earn points but will be assessed based on successful completion of class requirements and class expectations. In other words, grades reflect all aspects of class participation and class attitude. Grading Scale 90-100% - A 80-89% - B 70-79% - C 69% & below F If students do not earn a 70% or higher in class, credit will not be received. If a student fails a class, participation in summer school will be required. If more than two classes are failed throughout a year, the grade will be repeated. That said, students who stay on top of their work and make sure to ask for help when needed will do well. Students will assess their effort, attitude, work completed, and ability to self manage at weeks end. This is to encourage self-awareness and how ones behavior contributes to the learning and well-being of the greater community in class. Furthermore, it allows the teacher to see how well the students are understanding and applying the lessons of the week. Policies & Procedures: An emphasis in creating a fun, friendly, and respectful environment that encourages going beyond one's comfort zone is required to learn a new language. There must be mutual respect for everyone involved in the learning environment. Respect for the teacher, respect for oneself, respect for fellow classmates, and respect for others in general. Respect the right of others to learn, respect others property, and respect the opinions and beliefs of others. Use of headsets and laptops must be done in

a respectful manner that safeguards the integrity of this technology so that it is available and in working order for the other students. Students are to be seated quietly in their assigned seat and prepared to work within three minutes of class start time. Quietly means whispering to neighbors. A student prepared to work means having the necessary items out to begin the days activities. At the end of class, students will neaten up classroom by putting away any trash, tuck in chairs, put laptops, chargers, and headsets away. Apparently, it is necessary to specify disallowed activities: No leaving class before teacher dismissal at end of class time. No sitting or putting feet up on desks. No writing on desks. No loud, disruptive outbursts or behavior. Phones are to remain off and put away in a book bag, unless specifically preauthorized by the teacher. Side conversations are disrespectful and waste valuable class time. Any behavior that disrupts the learning of students, such as mocking or bullying, side conversations, or playing audio loudly, will not be tolerated and will be given two warnings and then sent to Dean of Students if behavior persists. Late Work: Students must turn in their work on time. Any extenuating circumstances that would prevent completion of an assignment by its due date should be discussed in advance to avoid penalty. Late credit will only receive 50 % of point value. Absences: In order to experience these classes to the fullest, students must be present every day and on time. If an absence occurs, students are responsible for making up all missed work. For every day of an excused absence, students are given 2 days to make up work. Notes, assignments, class activities, project work, group discussions, and extra copies of any handouts will be available in class and on edModo. Students will need to ask the teacher for any handouts upon their return. If a student is absent on a due-date for an assignment, every effort should be made to email it via HTHI email or edModo. However, if an assignment was given prior to the absence and the due date fell during your days of absenteeism, students must submit this work immediately upon their return. Excessive absences or patterns of absences on quiz days, when major assignments are due, or absences that reflect academic dishonesty may result in a failing grade for the assignment. Please address any questions or comments to me at melizondo@hightechhigh.org. Tutor/quiz makeup times can be pre-arranged for lunchtime. All students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity for extra time on Rosetta Stone during tutoring.
