Helpful Tips for the Analysis Essay

I've created a list of tips that will help you as you craft your Analysis Essay for this class. Most of them should sound pretty familiar to you at this point, but they're still pertinent to the assignment at hand.

There are many, many ways to write an Analysis Essay. Because there is no real template provided in the book s! for Analysis, you may be confused on how to actually construct an analytical paper or what sort of information is included within one. "he Analysis Essay is the second#most formal paper you'll write in this class, and will contain the same sort of in# depth analytical elements and angles you used for the $ompare%$ontrast essay, but more focused on one sub&ect. 'enerally, an analytical paper will contain no narrative elements, will always include a very clear and concise thesis statement, and will follow the five#body structure of a standard essay. (owever, the ways it can be organi)ed can and will vary greatly, so don't get discouraged if you think you're going the wrong direction or focusing too long on one point before moving on to the ne*t+as always, I'll be happy to guide you as much as possible one#on#one with your papers. You will, of course, have to take an angle on this paper. ,hould be fairly self#e*planatory, but in order to analy)e in#depth, you'll more than likely have to take an angle on this paper. I'll use topic -, the ,imone de Beauvoir .uote /0ne is not born a woman, one becomes a woman1 as an e*ample+how does one become a woman2 "here are many different factors you can consider, such as the historical angle what were the /re.uirements1 for becoming a woman in the early 3455s, versus today's standards2 Marriage2 Age2 Etc.!6 the biological angle childbirth, motherhood, etc.!6 the /successful1 angle &ob, running a household, financial independence, etc.!6 and so on. -o the same standards apply to boys and men as well2 7ou could take the same sorts of angles when you bring men into the paper as well+for e*ample, &ust from a historical perspective, boys in olden days /became men1 when they married, became fathers, went to war, etc. "hink deeply. -raw in perspectives that you may not have previously considered. In a way, women took the roles of men in the household when men went off to fight in 8orld 8ar II, didn't they2 Information like this is crucial to an analysis paper. ,imilarly, using the stereotypes topic B! as an e*ample, say you wanted to dissect and analy)e the /geeky graduate student1 stereotype one which I closely resemble, actually, in many ways!. 8hich parts of the stereotype are accurate, in your opinion2 8hich parts aren't, and in what ways2 Is there a true basis for the stereotype, or is it mostly a construction of society2 (ow2 Etc. You are not taking sides on this paper. "he purpose of this paper is to analy)e one topic from your point of view, using what you know and taking one or more angles to go in#depth with it. 7ou're still not picking a side by saying that something is completely /right1 or /wrong.1 Again, watch for grammatical/punctuation/formatting errors. As this is the second#most formal paper you'll be writing in this class, I will be grading even harder on it for these types of problems that should have been resolved in your first two papers. "herefore, I'm e*pecting this paper to be virtually error#free by the time I get the final copy+that includes fi*ing that default /e*tra doublespace after every line%paragraph1 thing in your word processor programs as well. Also, due to the analytical nature of this paper, you shouldn't be doing things like using e*clamation points, asking .uestions, misusing ellipses, or needlessly inserting .uotes

Remember Good writing takes time, folks. !on"t rush through this paper, or your analytical thought processes re#uired for it. I know that analysis is hard 9 critical thinking is difficult and painstaking. 7ou have to go over your paper multiple times, think of every angle and be very careful what you include and what you leave out. 7ou have to make sure you aren't relying too much on description or not backing your points up with evidence. "here's a lot to do, I know. But you can do it6 I have faith in all of you. "he vast ma&ority of you are great writers. And, again, if you need help or if you &ust want to make sure you're on the right track, don't be too prideful to come to me.
