WEAVER MIDDLE SCHOOL 7thand 8TH GRADE WELLNESS

A new curriculum has been adopted by Hilliard Schools and the district has incorporated various disciplines of health and physical education under the title of WELLNESS. The emphasis of this curriculum is learning personal responsibility for engaging in behaviors that develop optimal health. We will be covering the various aspects of wellness including: Physical, motional! "ental, #ntellectual, Social, and $ccupational categories. $ur hope is that by providing a comprehensive school%wide system to wellness, we can develop lifelong, positive health%related attitudes and behaviors in our students. #n physical education class, our emphasis will be on student participation and personal fitness. The activities covered in class will include various team and individual sports and other physical activities. $ther more &lifetime' recreation opportunities will be offered as well. ach class will include physical conditioning and stretching. Students will also periodically be ta(ing part in the physical and s(ills testing over the year to measure their own fitness levels. #t is hoped that your student will ta(e an active role in improving his own physical fitness over the course of the year. Physical fitness opportunities will include cardiovascular fitness e)uipment, aerobic e*ercise e)uipment and strength apparatus.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:
Advanced Physical Education is a high school credited course. Students will actively participate and complete the e*pectations of +th grade Physical ducation. Students are also re)uired to be actively involved in a school or community organi,ed team sport, write a wee(ly reflection -ournal and conduct an oral presentation based on community resources and how these resources are correlated with social, emotional, and physical wellness. 7th Grade Health & PE- The curriculum for the seventh grade students is an organi,ed plan designed to teach the students the information and s(ills they need to become health literate, maintain and improve health, prevent disease, and reduce health%related ris( behaviors. The framewor( for healthful living includes teaching students about health ris(s. stress management. protecting self and others. relationships. nutrition and weight management. tobacco use. substance abuse. body systems and human growth and development. Health and Physical ducation class will be taught in /.0 wee( units, once during each nine wee(s throughout the semester. P units will consist of s(ill building, individual and team sports, fitness activities, goal setting and daily strength and fle*ibility activities.

7th and 8th Grade Fitness- The curriculum for 7th and 8th grade fitness is to increase fitness levels of all
students. The class provides opportunities for all students to achieve increases through the use of fitness machines, exercise equipment, video instruction, Wii Fit and activities guided by the teacher. All students are at various fitness levels and their goal is to monitor their improvements through fitness testing and completion of or!out sheets. LOCKS AND LOCKERS 1 2our student will be assigned a loc(er to use during his!her phys. ed. period.
That loc(er is his!hers only for that class perio . $ther students will be using that loc(er during the day, so it is important that your child not leave anything in his!her gym loc(er after class, including his!her gym uniform. 3lothes left in loc(ers after class may be lost or stolen. Thefts have ta(en place in the past. Please remind your students not to bring things of value to phys. ed. class. 4o not leave electronic devices, money, or other valuables in areas that are not monitored.

DRESSIN! % ach student will be given an additional three 567 minutes past the tardy bell to be dressed

and seated in their assigned area before being counted tardy for class 5this ma(es a total of seven 89: minutes from the end of the previous period to get dressed and ready for physical education class7. Students who are tardy to class will have to sign in as tardy in the attendance office. Students will be given four to si* minutes to dress at the end of the period to change bac( into their school clothes.

S)eat tops an *otto&s % As we may be outside on any days where the temperature e*ceeds /0 degrees, sweats or wind pants and -ac(ets may be worn over top of, but not in instead of the phys. ed. uniform.

DE+ERITS % These are incidents of improper behavior and will adversely affect your nine wee(s grade.

DOCTOR1S NOTES % Students must have a DOCTOR1S note to be e*cused from class for any e*tended

period of time. #f the illness or in-ury does not re)uire medical attention, the student will be e*pected to participate in class. ncourage your child to participate in class even when they aren<t at their best, but are still able to try. Please note, we are now able to accommodate those students who have in-uries to their arms or legs. 2our child will be encouraged to try to maintain their fitness level, if it can be done safely. 4ear Parents, We feel that it is important that you and your child understand our e*pectations.
