Theatre: a Narrative Snapshot

Coming Soon: A Disney Musical During the Christmas break, I decided to go visit the director of a small art council in my town known as MACA (McDowell Art Council). While I was there, we talked about doing a new show for this years theatre camp. There she talked about doing having me direct a musical, but not just any musical: a Disney musical. I was really shocked that she would say that because musicals are actually on of the hardest things to direct and for her to say that to me made me feel like all the experience, joys and hardships I have went through were worth something and now I can follow my dreams. When I left I started to think of all the times that I have had in my 5 years in the theatre community in my small town. I guess you can say it has made me the person I am today.

New Adventures begin: The Secret Garden One of the first shows I did in my small town was a production of The Secret Garden. I was charged to not only act in it but also stage hand the production. It was the first actual part I got and the second time I worked backstage. The part was of a stationmaster. It was not big but I really did not care because I got to do a show and actually be in the spotlight for once. For me, this is one of the most fun and beautiful

Vargas 2 shows I have ever done. Acting is one of the hardest things you can do because the idea is that your not yourself. Although it may look easy, it really is not and can get excruciating stressful, especially during show times. A great example of this would be the mayhem that happened during our second night. Now many people think the first night is going to be the worst but actually it is the second. This is because opening night is usually goes well that many people are supper pumped and are not as focus as they were the day before. This goes well with this show. Anyway what had happened was one of our little girls who was back stage decided to walk into are garden set and accidentally tripped and fell and screamed while a scene was going on. This was so bad that our director ran down, during the show, backstage and I had to turn the lights on. She was ok but it was one of my first mishaps in theatre and probably not my last but hay the show must go on.

Things Get a Little Long and Crazy: Lysistrada So sometimes in theatre you come across a show where you need leave your morals at the door. This is one of those shows. Why? Penis! That right I had to wear a penis for this production and to be honest it was hilarious, especially the first night we received the props. I was one of the men that had to wear it and it literally took us forty minutes to get through a five-minute scene. It was hilarious and to this day whenever I think of this show, I think of those penises and the fun and craziness of it.

Learning to work from behind: Almost, Maine One of the other shows I did was a small show known as Almost, Maine. It was not only the first show I ever did for the high school company (Titan Theatre) but also, it

Vargas 3 was my first production stage managing. Now people would think that acting can be hard, but compared to stage managing it is a piece of cake. This show had a lot of scene changes and props that I almost felt like I was going to explode. Lucky enough I had two lovely stagehands and all my new theatre friends to support and help me. To be honest, this show was extremely stressful but also really rewarding to do. This show was also one of the first productions I did where I was a student-director. Now this I did not know about until the programs were shown to us and in a way it surprised me. I never thought I could direct at that time because I was still learning. In fact I did not know why until I remembered trying to help one of our scenes try to become better as the male actor was not getting the idea across. So yeah I guess you can say I got two for one with my firsts with being a co-student director and a stage manager.

Go, Go, Go, Ow! : Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Color Dream coat So this was my first musical and I absolutely love doing it but sometimes in theatre your theatre experience you work hard and then when the show comes up and your partner completely forgets. This is one of those shows. What had happen is that in the show I played the baker as one of my character and I was suppose to faint. Well on opening night I started to fall back, hoping my best friend who was the butler would catch me. Instead I fell and hit my back on the stage floor. Boy was that painful and what was worst was that I had a few second costume changes to get back on. Luckily I did but to this day I never forgave him for forgetting, yet I still laugh when I think about it .

Vargas 4 The Rocky Algorithms of Theatre: Proof So Proof is my favorite play that I have done for several reasons. The first was that it was the first time where I student directed a show with the director. Now before you guys think that that I loved this show at first, I really did not because honestly when I first read it I did not like it. I felt like it was not going to be interest or good. That changed when we started to rehearse and not I respect the piece. Also being able to actually have some say in this show was amazing. It helped give new eyes to what we are seeing. The second reason is because with all the hurdles that we had to face as a high school, it still was amazing. One of the biggest problems was the fact that we lost our theatre space for our opening weekend because of a one-basket ball game. Our director almost quit on us but thanks to the cast hard work, and some help from the community theatre, we were able to use the community theatre space. That being said it started new problems like working with new lighting, changing movement due to a smaller stage and even building the set in two weeks. Thats right we had two weeks and till this day it is one of the best shows we did. This just shows that with the right minds and cooperation, anything is possible. Theatre for pay: My Fatal Valentine So the director who worked on Lysistrada wanted me to go a murder mystery. The show was really fun but the best thing about this show was the fact that I got paid. It was the first time I ever got paid for doing theatre and it made me feel great because I never got paid for anything. Now that being said I did enjoy the show because of all the fun people I got to do it with. Plus it was a murder mystery so there was a lot of improve which I do not do a lot. Finally, it was the first show I did where I got to be something I

Vargas 5 was not: an English playboy bastard and it was so fun being something I was not and convincing people I was, especially when people in the audience know you.

The Abandoned Show: Blithe Spirit Blither Spirit was a show that the high school was planning on doing for a fall production of my senior year. Sadly through it would never happened because our Director and sponsor for the high school theatre club retired due to medical purposes. So why is this important. Well for one thing I did a lot of shows with him and to me he was like another grandparent to me. He was also the one who knew what to do and was always having us do crazy things just to get us to know each other. He will be forever missed by the company and to me.

Oh no were Lesbians: Not-So-Grimm Tales So when I was in drama class, I was asked to direct a small show and boy was it a haste. This is because of several reasons. First was that no one wanted to practice and just goof off no matter how hard I tried to get things done. Second was that I had to do everything because no one wanted to help, even the teacher. Finally, I was unable to rehearse my Cinderella scene with the group (thats right I had to direct, do everything and act). So what happened was that toward the end of the scene, which was going well at this point, the fairy godmother, who was a guy in drag, walks in and says Oh no were lesbians and literally walks of stage with Cinderella. I just froze and then ran off stage. It was one of the most funniest and yet random way to end a scene. The show, in my opinion was a disaster but in a way I learned so much being my first time directing.

Accidentally: Aesop Fable Redox During the summer I try to help out in theatre productions. So one summer, the head lady of MACA asked me to help with a small theatre camp production of Aesop tales, known as Aesop Fable Redox, that she was doing. It was her first time doing a camp like this. So I go in and build the set and get lights set up. Then I start helping her run the camp by helping with costumes, teaching them theatre ideas and even helping with blocking on stage. So I started to work with these kids and she would go work in her office. So in a way I became the director the piece and did not really know it until the programs came out. To be honest, while I was watching the show, I was happy to direct it because they all looked like they were having fun and the parents seemed to be having fun and enjoying it. Those two ideas are what I love about giving to theatre. So in a way maybe it was not an accident that I had directed it. Maybe I was meant to direct it.

I Will Never Grow Up: Peter Pan When thinking of all these memories none seem to shine more then what got me into this world of theatre in the first place. That goes to a small production of peter pan, which I did at the YMCA back in Florida. It all started when we went by the YMCA to explore and their was a flyer for a small production of peter pan. When thinking about this production now, it was nothing special, just us doing songs and small scenes in costume in the Terrance of the YMCA as Peter pan, but somehow it got me into this world. The show opened me up to other shows and productions and made me the man I

Vargas 7 am today. I guess you said I flew into the Neverland of theatre, where I will never grow apart from theatre.
