Lesson Content What Standards (national or state) relate to this lesson? (You should include ALL applicable standards. Rarely do teachers use just one: theyd never get through them all.) Essential Understanding (What is the big idea or essential question that you want students to come away with? In other words, what, aside from the standard and our objective, will students understand when they finish this lesson?)

Name: __Sabrina Schaller__________________________________ Group Size: Date of Lesson: February 5 18

SS.2. C. 2.5- Evaluate the contributions of various African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, veterans, and women. SS.2.A.1.1- Examine primary and secondary sources. SS.2.A.3.1- Identify terms and designations of time sequence. Students will need to understand how to chronologically represent people and events in our countrys history within a timeline.

Objectives- What are you teaching? (Student-centered: What will students know and be able to do after this lesson? Include the ABCDs of objectives: action, behavior, condition, and degree of mastery, i.e., "C: Given a sentence written in the past or present tense, A: the student B: will be able to rewrite the sentence in future tense D: with no errors in tense or tense contradiction (i.e., I will see her yesterday.)." Note: Degree of mastery does not need to be a percentage.)

After teacher modeling students will get into groups of 4 and create a timeline of their own. Students will be given construction paper and a long white piece of paper. There will be multiple dates and pictures of events. The information will have to be organized by the students based on what they read in the text. For example: If a person was born in 1912 they would have to put the paper that days was born underneath the date as well as the picture. They would know this by looking at the handout sheet given to them. The first group will have Clara Barton they will need to have the following information in this order: 1821 (Clara Barton was born December 25 in oxford Massachusetts), in 1851 she graduated from school, 1854 (founded one of the first public schools in Bordentown, New Jersey and the school started with 6 students), 1862 (Clara started distributing first aid supplies to hospitals, camps and battlefields, and also helped wounded soldiers), 1864 (she was honored with the title of The Super Superintendent of Union Nurses), 1881 (Clara established the American Red Cross Association), 1912 (Clara Barton passed away April 12 in Glen Echo Maryland). The second group will have Booker T. Washington Group will need to have the following information in this order: 1856 (B.W was born in Hales Ford, Franklin County. The exact date of his birth is unknown,), 1872 (B.W attends Hampton Institute), 1875 (B.W graduates from Hampton Institute and goes to West Virginia to teach), 1881 (B.W goes to

Tuskegee, Alabama and becomes Tuskegees only teacher), 1882 (Marries his first wife who dies two years later), 1896 (becomes the first African American to receive an honorary degree from Harvard University), 1901 (becomes the first African American to dine at the white house invited by Theodore Roosevelt), 1915 (B.w dies at Tuskegee). The third group will have Christopher Columbus and the timeline needs to be ordered by the following: 1451 (Chris was born in Genoa, Italy), 1465 (Christopher Columbuss first journeys), 1479 (Columbus gets married to Felipa Perestrella e Moniz and they lived in Portugal, Spain), 1484 (Columbus asks for money to find a western route from Europe to Asia. He asked for help from Portugal and England but he was refused) 1491 (Columbus asks for money from the king and queen of spain and they said yes) August 1492 (Columbus sets sail with three ships: Pinta, Nina, and Santa Maria), October 1492 (They made landfall. They thought they were in Asia but were actually on the American Continent), march 1493 (Columbus returns to Spain), 1506 (Christopher dies in Spain) The fourth group will have George Washington and the timeline needs to be in the following order: 1732 (Washington is born in Westmoreland County, VA), 1754 (Washington starts his military career in the French and Indian War. 1775 (Washington leads the continental army into the American Revolution), 1789 (Washington becomes the first US president) 1793 (Washington laid the cornerstone of the u.s capitol in Washington, D.C) 1799 (Died at Mount Vernon) Students need to get every date in the correct order in a neat manner. They will have articles they need to pull dates from but I will give them extra dates that arent mentioned in the articles.
Rationale Address the following questions: Why are you teaching this objective? Where does this lesson fit within a larger plan? Why are you teaching it this way? Why is it important for students to learn this concept? Evaluation Plan- How will you know students have mastered This objective will be taught so that students gain an understanding of why its important to understand how to organize important dates of famous events and people and to see how throughout the years these people and events have affected society and even the world. It is important for students to learn this concept because it helps organize history in a visual way.

Students will work together to create a timeline on a specific event or person. They will be able to write a step-by-step process on how to put together a timeline. The process includes: 1.) Gathering information

USF Elementary Education Lesson Plan Template (S 2014) Grade Level Taught: 2nd Subject/Content: Social Studies
your objectives? Address the following: What formative evidence will you use to document student learning during this lesson? What summative evidence will you collect, either during this lesson or in upcoming lessons?

2.) Organizing the information by writing down the events with the year 3.) Pasting/writing on paper 4.) Present information For the formative assessment the teacher will walk around to each group and make sure each student is getting a chance to paste the date to the timeline and understands why the dates go in a specific order. For the summative assessment the teacher will look to see if the students have arranged each of the dates correctly and can summarize the different parts of a timeline.

What Content Knowledge is necessary for a teacher to teach this material?

Teacher needs to understand how to form a timeline with dates pertaining to an event or person. Teacher needs to know specific dates of Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Booker T. Washington, and Clara Barton in order to organize specific dates on the timeline.

What background knowledge is necessary for a student to successfully meet these objectives? How will you ensure students have this previous knowledge? Who are your learners? What do you know about them? What do you know about their readiness for this content?

Students need to understand where they can find information on events and people. Teacher will show them through text and websites the information on these historic events and people can be found. Students need to be able to organize dates based on what comes first and what comes last.

What misconceptions might students have about this content?

Name: __Sabrina Schaller__________________________________ Group Size: Date of Lesson: February 5 18

They might not understand how to organize the dates correctly and may gather too much information to the point where it may become information overload. Once problem is recognized teacher will use aid to assist student in understanding the material.

Lesson Implementation Teaching Methods (What teaching method(s) will you use during this lesson? Examples include guided release, 5 Es, direct instruction, lecture, demonstration, partner word, etc.)

At the start of the lesson I will use direct instruction and then when they are assigned the assignment, the students will break off into groups and work on their own.

Step-by-Step Plan (What exactly do you plan to do in teaching this lesson? Be thorough. Act as if you needed a substitute to carry out the lesson for you.) Where applicable, be sure to address the following: What Higher Order Thinking (H.O.T.) questions will you ask? How will materials be

Each content area may require a different step-by-step format. Use whichever plan is appropriate for the content taught in this lesson. For example, in science, you would detail the 5 Es here (Engage/Encountering the Idea; Exploring the Idea; Explanation/Organizing the Idea; Extend/Applying the Idea; Evaluation). For social studies we will be learning how to construct a time-line for important events and people in history. Lets take a look at a timeline about Abraham Lincoln: (http://whitmer.wikis.birmingham.k12.mi.us/Abraham+Lincoln)

distributed? Who will work together in groups and how will you determine the grouping? How will students transition between activities? What will you as the teacher do? What will the students do? What student data will be collected during each phase? What are other adults in the room doing? How are they supporting students learning? What model of co-teaching are you using?

What are some of the things you see on these timelines? Students should answer: dates, changes or different events, pictures, lines How do you think this timeline can help us? What is it used for? Students: We can see history in the order the events occurred and it can help us understand why certain events were affected by the years before them and after them. Im going to put you in four groups. Each group will have a historic person you may or may not have heard about. They are the following: George Washington, Clara Barton, Christopher Columbus, and Booker T. Washington. Some groups will have more than four people. Together you will use the hand out I will provide for each of the historic characters. You will organize the dates in order from what happened first all the way to the end of the persons life. After the dates are glued, you will need to look in your handout sheet to find which paper matches the event with the date. Then, color the pictures that belong with the dates description and glue them on. Students will get into groups and for 15-20 minutes start working on their own timelines. At this time my CT and I will monitor the students with learning disabilities to make sure while they are in those groups they are getting a chance to express their ideas. Once the students are finished they will present it to the class. These are the four groups: Clara Barton, George Washington, Christopher Columbus, and Booker T. Washington. Each group will have construction paper, crayons, and paper with pictures and dates relating to information. They need to help each other in constructing the timeline. There will be one date they need to fill in by researching it on the computer. If time permits, students will present their work.

I will pull the student aside to work with CT or me.

What will you do if

a student masters the content quickly? This will be a group project not independent but they could add more information to the timeline by finding extra research.

Meeting your students needs as people and as learners

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of your students? Everyone needs to understand how a timeline works. If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community? Around our communities we continually have things going on that may affect us and could possible change our way of living. Understanding how to find this information and organize it is important.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional challenge during this lesson (enrichment)? Students will be monitored and pulled if necessary by teacher assistant.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional language support? Not applicable

Accommodations (If needed) (What students need specific accommodation? List individual

S- Comprehension, physical disability (needs to work in an area that compensates for his physical need, close monitoring, instruction may need to be repeated) L- Comprehension, SLD (close monitoring, instruction may have to be repeated)
