Beowulf Final Project (12A)

Due: October 3rd, 2013 Purpose: For this assessment, you will need to demonstrate your understanding of archetypes and how perspective can influence the way an archetype/character may seem. Directions: Choose an archetype that appears in Beowulf and show that archetype from a different perspective. Imagine your character from a different point of view in the book and demonstrate how this alters the way the audience sees that archetype. Your project should characterize the archetype and answer the following questions: Who is the character and what is its archetype in Beowulf? Where is the proof of this archetype in the text? What is the perspective from which the archetype is being viewed in your project? How does the archetype here differ from in the original epic? How does the change in perspective alter the way the audience views that archetype? How does perspective shape what we see? Why is it important?

Format: You may choose to complete this assignment in number of ways: 1. Visual Presentations (piece of art, book cover, book advertisement, twitter feed, etc)Visual presentations must express both the characters archetype and the perspective in a visual way. Any visual piece must be accompanied by a 150-350 word explanation of what is taking place in the image and how the image answers the questions above. 2. Performance Presentations (song, skit, poetry reading, commercial, etc)Performance presentations must answer the questions above in a performance to the class. For any performance presentation, a script must be submitted to the teacher along with a 150-350 word explanation of what is taking place in the performance and how it answers the questions above. **Performances for this assignment may be performed live or prerecorded. If they are prerecorded, they must be turned in by October 2nd to be sure they are able to be played in class. 3. Presentation of Writing (essay, poem, book review, scene rewrite, etc)- Writing presentations can either be in the form of the traditional analytical paper (MLA format) or can be presented as another, nontraditional piece of writing that shows the archetype from a different perspective. Any writing assignment must be 400-900 words in length and must answer the questions above.

Presentation: All projects will be presented in class during a three minute time slot on either 10/3 or 10/4 (regardless of presentation date, all assignments must be turned in by 10/3). Presentations will
