Experiencing Design Gammaduwa as traditional communication methodology and its impact to the contemporary communication

Aimed on developing peoples mental and physical condition for better position, a group of activities what do for God, devil or visible/ invisible people or influences/ forces are simply named as white magic. Through experience Gammaduwa which was held in Kiridiwela area and own experiences, beliefs always blend together because all of these activities have many simple communication methods, tools or tradition or culture which was based on need of society since hundred and hundred years and still they are representing some kind of value within the society in different manner in Sri Lankan context. In this place, white magic(Gammaduwa) was based on around the weda gedara and as a traditional ritual ,it is a offerings to gods and deities in return for their blessings, and for protection and prosperity of the village and getting protection for deceases, evil eye etc.. According to simple observation these things help to develop unity, harmony among villagers and it is a time to identifying new people and develops relationship, Getting knowledge and practicing and experiencing Sri Lankan culture, rituals and beliefs. And these rituals help to protect customs, ethics and beliefs. Through analytical observation can identify important features within traditional communication media such as well feed backing, using familiar symbols and methods, look which not present foreign features and belief. Most probably, within these kind of white magic or black magic or other related activities have different communication systems and some methods/ elements are more similar to each other. There are inter personal, intra personal, small group, public / mass and inter cultural communication such as body language, discussions, dialogues, usage of symbols, performances, prayers and chanting/ singing. Gammaduwa is a one which had simple communication methods based on social need since many centuries. There are few examples briefly. Milla kepima/ pee vima (people who ready to are ready to do this work in pure heart and mind).Still these things are in our society which communicate themselves and others about their readiness. Offering oil lamps,bettle, flowers (to gain permission and inviting Gods)contemporary society also have same value these objects and actions in cultural and social background. Biso kappa situvima (memorandum) In many event remembering person or action do in symbolic manner. Kalapandam situvima(get protection). Through prayers, charms, different rituals do for getting protection. It helps to increase mental condition. Through that belief people achieve best results. Paththini netima(blessing people). Abha vidamana (dialogues which include sharp or unconventional or contemporary words). These things will close minds of audience and generate fun. Not only past still today have these things helped to people gain entertainment. Puppetry or other related activities also based on this kind of communication method. Gara yakuma(to remove evil eye/ evil mouth and other bad effects / and building dialogues which have entertainment, and educate audience about

life, sexuality etc) These thing do build a knowledgeable society. Rituals such as spilling saffron liquid, wishing good luck (seth kavi), run over milk (kiri ithirima) and blowing conch do for getting protection, wishing prosperity and good health. Still these things are continue to one generation to other generation with keeping scientific truth. Alms giving, handling tea times always representing hospitality and unity. Yodini(using to giving knowledge about historical stories of Gammaduwa). Poems (to remove bad effects of symbols which concern as bad sign within villagers and show the power of cure ) These things help to Priest (Kapu mahatha) to be more closer to audience. Body languages, sounds effects, dancing and performance, cloths, colours, materials use for decorations, music effects, poems, stories and different languages and its styles, tone of addressing, customs, rituals, time and duration are blended together in traditional communication methodologies. And its impact goes not only contemporary communication but also future era too. Because information compilation, providing entertainment, generate participation and motivating are some important characteristic which are in traditional rituals such as Gammaduwa. So their impacts are lot in contemporary communication. There impact represents as rituals which named from different names with few differences, customs or symbols which still represent its symbolic / spiritual values, new entertainment programmes(ex:folk drama), religious activities, Agriculture base festivals and folk rituals have similarities too. Whatever these tradition communication methodologies which were heritable bond with people and life style, come to present society with some changes because of satisfaction of day today needs which can form in physical, mental or spiritual manner. So there are no human beings and society, culture without any communication.
