Introduction
An airfoil is the 2D cross-section shape of the wing,

which creates sufficient lift with minimal drag. Application: - Airplanes

- Wind mills - Drag reduction system in high performance vehicles. - Space ships

Terminology

Types of an airfoil
Flat bottom airfoil
- It is use for airplanes having high Mach no. and high maneuverability.
Semi-Symmetric airfoil

- It is use for airplanes having relatively low Mach no. But good maneuverability.
Symmetrical airfoil

- It is use for airplanes having low Mach no. But good stability.

Dynamics
Lift
The component of the total aerodynamic force of an airfoil that is perpendicular to the resultant relative wind.

FL = CL A v/2 Drag
The component of the total aero dynamic force of an airfoil that is perpendicular to the resultant relative wind.

FD = CD A v/2

Co-efficient of lift
The lift coefficient cl refers to the dynamic lift characteristics of two dimensional flow foil section, with the reference area replaced by the flow chord.

Co-efficient of Drag
The drag coefficient cd refers to the dynamic Drag characteristics of two - dimensional flow foil section, with the reference area replaced the flow chord.

Aspect Ratio
In aerodynamics, the aspect ratio of a wing is essentially the ratio of its length to its breadth (chord). A high aspect ratio indicates long, narrow wings, whereas a low aspect ratio indicates short, stubby wings.
