Lakeshore Collegiate Institute Drama Department Course Outline

Course: ADA20, Grade 10 Drama Teacher: Ms Toal Room: 143 Email: Jessica.toal@tdsb.on.ca Course Website: msjtoal.weebly.com Course Expectations: This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences. Guiding Question: How do we, as artists, create and explore both imagined and real worlds? Unit 1: Building a Community Together, students will learn the fundamentals of creating a community among artists. Students will participate and lead drama games focused on nurturing the collaborative process. Students will learn about each others lives through a variety of dramatic presentations. Evaluation: Leading a Warm up Game (Foundations), Scene Study (Creating), Monologue Study (Creating), Theatre Term Test (Foundations) Unit 2: Canadian Theatre Students will learn about the history of Canadian theatre, specifically companies with a mandate to produce Canadian theatre. We will explore works written by a variety of Canadian artists from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Students will participate in close readings and stagings of monologues and scenes. Evaluation: Play Review (Reflection), Canadian Scene Study (Creating), Canadian Monologue Study (Creating), Canadian Theatre Test (Foundations) Unit 3: Docudrama Students will explore the world of verbatim theatre. Together, we will use the collaborative process to create a final presentation written by using found audio and interviewing. Students will look at aspects of history through a new lens: the perspective of the other. Evaluation: Devised Piece Process (Foundations), Devised Piece Performance (Creating), Journals (Reflecting)

Unit 4: Improv Students will explore the fundamentals of improve and will grow comfortable with applying these tecniques in practice. Emphasis will be placed on quick thinking, advancing the scene, and vulnerability. Evaluation: Participation (Foundations), Improv Reflection Paper (Reflection) Unit 5 Culminating Project: Childrens Theatre Students will explore the form and mechanics of Childrens theatre. Together we will choose a topic and use collective creation to stage a Childrens play for various middle schools in the area. Evaluation: 10% Childrens Play Process (Foundations), 10% Childrens Play Performance (Creating), 10% Childrens Play Reflection Journals (Reflecting) *Please note that this is only a guideline. Ms Toal may modify evaluations over the course of the semester. She will respond asap with help or feedback. 5) Wednesday Lunches are English Help days.
