    Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is used to treat and prevent scurvy, which is a vitamin C deficiency. It comes in tablet form in doses of 250 mg, 500 mg, 1000 mg, and 5000 mg. For treatment of scurvy, children should take 250-500 mg per day and adults should take 1000-1500 mg per day divided into one or two doses until symptoms improve after 2-4 weeks. As prevention, children and adults can take 50-100 mg per day as long as needed. Vitamin C is generally well tolerated at recommended doses but can cause gastrointestinal issues at high doses over 5000 mg daily.
